Because of the salary cap, it really is true in TSN-SOM that the best trade is one that helps both teams. Since the pricing is quite accurate and most teams are right up against the cap, you can't "steal" a good player for nothing. But, what you can do is give up a good player and get a player back who is equally "good" in the abstract, but who fits your situation better. For instance, I had Burnett in a pitcher's park, and another owner had Colon in a hitter's park. When we made the trade, Burnett was 1-9 with a 6.42 ERA for me, and Colon was 3-5 with a 5.00 ERA for him. Afterwards, Colon had a 2.56 ERA and 1.01 WHIP for me; Burnett had a 3.36 ERA for him. I missed the WC by 5 games, but who knows; Burnett was [i:194ab04d0e]so[/i:194ab04d0e] bad for me that maybe I could have squeezed in had I made the trade earlier
Here's a true old-school one from 2001: Jermaine Dye for Orlando Palmeiro, Mike Darr and Jose Jimenez. I was in Coors, where Dye was a great power hitter, but I already had plenty of those; what I needed was a leadoff man and a closer. Darr solved the leadoff problem by hitting 336/408/467 for me, and Jimenez was a good Coors fit who ended up saving 15 games in half a season, with a 3.37 ERA.
