HAL - we love ya but what the heck?

HAL - we love ya but what the heck?

Postby CHARLESBELL » Wed Nov 29, 2006 10:16 am

I've been playing this game a very long time, but I can't explain this. Is there some rational (or irrational) reason what HAL would bring fossum in in relief, when fossum is in my starting rotation? That isn't supposed to happen unless HAL has no other choice. But he did. I have a lefty reliever (Sisco) sitting in the pen wasting away that HAL absolutely refuses to use and was available for the game. Sisco has made 5 appearances for less than 3 innings work in 69 games and last pitched in game 63, 5 games before this one. Anyone have a clue why this happened? Note that I was using fossum in relief at the start of the season, but HAL loved him so much none of my other relief pitchers were getting any innings, and one of my *SPs was having a rough time, so fossum went into the rotation around game 45. Here's the box score:

It may come down to individual and/or managerial settings as to why your not getting the use you want . What's the RP managerial settings on ? What are Sisco's individual settings? All those thing may have a bearing .

That I can explain. All other things being equal, HAL prefers the higher-fatigue reliever to the lower-fatigue one. This makes sense in terms of keeping everyone rested, but of course may not make sense in that it may end up meaning that your bad relievers pitch more than your good ones. So, unless we're talking about the mop-up man, it's unwise to have a lousy reliever with better fatigue than the ones whom you want to get more innings. (And some here have said that even their mop-up man gets used much more than they'd like, although I personally have never experienced this.) It's furthermore possible (although you'd hope not) that HAL loved Fossum's R3 so much that it overrode other considerations in the specific situation you're bringing up here.

That I can't explain. Almost regardless of who else is in your bullpen, you would think everyone would get more than three innings' work in half a season; more so when the guy is both an R2 and a decent pitcher. I'm sure if you figure out how to use a reliever that infrequently, a lot of people would love to know the secret; they just won't do it with someone as good as Sisco ;)

Ah, I think I found the problem. It was in manager's settings. Stupid me forgot to take fossum off of the lefty setup setting. I didn't even realize I'd put him in there, and saw it when I started putting my settings down as Free Radicals asked. Also explains why HAL gave fossum even more love when he was available to relieve.

Still can't understand Sisco, though. Not a theme league, either. Just your normal autoleague, and the pitching is facing almost exactly 50% lefties and righties. I too wish I knew what I was doing to keep an rp nearly permanatently out of games, deanTSC.

In last night's series HAL made a total of 7 relief pitcher moves, and Sisco stayed in the pen the whole series again. I'm going to put him in as the lefty setup and see what happens.

PS - Sisco has no individual settings other than avoid righties. Closer is max (rodriguez both sides) and relief is normal.

Here's the team, maybe someone will see something that would explain sisco - it's my only autoleague this year and I was aiming for a prolific doubles team. I got that but I came up short in too many other areas and the team sucks. Gonna get a lot of doubles, though.

Just as a followup on Sisco, he got into 4 games and pitched 3.2 innings in the 18 games after I made him the lefty setup. Funny thing is, he's now injured for the next six games. Somebody really doesn't like this guy. :?
