Waivers Question - Position Requirements

Waivers have yet to run on a new team of mine. The player I want to make as my first choice is a hitter, and will only "fit" salary-wise once I dump a decent $$ SP I don't want. I have no pitchers on my roster with both an S and an R rating, so I can't dump that SP pre-waivers. If I make my first waiver move picking up that hitter in return for dropping that pitcher, will HAL disallow the move because it will leave me with too few SPs? Even is my second move is to pick up another guy with an S rating? I'm afraid this is so, and that I'll need to drop that SP first, for a scrub pitcher, and then hope that hitter is still available in the second waiver round (plus, I'm 11th in the waiver order)...Could it be that HAL will allow me to clear up position requirements before the season starts, and allow the first waiver move I'd most like to make? The wording of the rules doesn't suggest that to be so, but I thought I'd ask...

Short answer is your roster integrity has to be maintained transaction by transaction.

A transaction during waivers is really not much different than any other time--you can pick up anyone within salary and roster limits, and you can drop doing the same.

A single transaction may include up to one drop and one pick up, but at the end of that transaction your roster and salary limits must be met.

That's why a lot of folks will drop a moderately priced hitter vs two .50 scrubs right after the draft--it gives you a bit more flexibility in waivers.

Yes, Hal will not allow the move to be made. Your first waiver pick can not be a hitter for a pitcher as it would bring your roster of pitchers below the required 10.

hechojazz, you cannot drop a pitcher to get the hitter with your first pick.

If you don't have enough $$$ and haven't dropped anyone yet in pre-waivers, consider dropping 1 or 2 hitters with signficant salaries in pre-waivers to help free up some money. For example, if you are planning on picking up a $9m hitter, you can drop two $3m hitters in pre-waivers, and then another $3m hitter in the waiver pick. If you already dropped two $.50m bums in pre-waivers, you might be screwed.

Oh I dropped as much salary as I could, but I got most of the players I wanted, hence the 11th place waivers ranking. So I'll just hope my target hitter is still around when it finally gets back to me in the second round. If not, I'll figure something else out...too bad waivers doesn't simply require you to get your numbers straightened out before opening day. Probably a rule to avoid the dislocation that would attend having a team or more in the league that never addressed a numbers disparity, and wasn't able to play games that counted.
