Vet advise for my team please

Postby ashliz » Thu Apr 05, 2007 12:35 pm

Hi I am a rookie, this is my 1st team, just wanted some help or advise, my team is leading the league in most of the batting catigories, piching is mid level w/all other teams, I know i am lacking in D and speed, so i was thinking, of dropping Carpenter, Zito and Penny, to try and tighten the piching a bit to help w/ D and get one more stud picher for my #2 spot and a better picher four my # 4 spot then just roll the dice on my 5 spot w/a .50m pichehttp://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/baseball/stratomatic/2007/team/team_other.html?user_id=1764r. Help anyone?? Thanks!

ashliz, your link isn't working for me. Try going to the league statistics page, click on your team, and copy/paste that link.

Without seeing your team, I can offer this advice.

Do NOT start dropping players unless you are absolutely getting crushed.

Some players come on later than others depending on rolls.

If you start dropping players, you lose 20% of their value for nothing. You only get 80% back which means your team may start at 80M, and after you start dropping players, it will only be worth 70M and everyone else still has an 80M roster....this will hurt more than help in long run.

If you want to upgrade, your best bet is to trade your pitchers for defensive help. But if you are leading in hitting, you may want to think twice about breaking that up. Your pitchers may not be at their full potential because of your fielding but if your hitting is making up for it, I would just leave it alone unless the roof caves in.

Link works if you remove the "piche" on the front and the "r." from the back.

Initial reactions:
Your defense makes your pitching much worse -- you'll lose some games with it. That's a true iron glove league team. Otherwise the players you have are solid.

Not much bullpen depth. Not great OBP vs. R. Somewhat succeptable to lefthanded hitters and not as good against righthanded pitchers. A couple of high injury rolls (playing Sheffield vs. righties is asking for a 15-game injury).

well, you've got a winning record...but lots of issues. as mentioned above, your defense is atrocious, and will eventually undermine an overall quality pitching staff. ideally you may be able to make some trades to fix some issues, but if you can't pull one off, i'd suggest somehow correcting these things...
either nevin or fick has to go...carrying three catchers, two of them being these afronts to the tools of ignorance, exposes you to having two catchers hurt at the same time, which you're facing now. neither is a suitable replacement over more than a series when loduca goes down, so I would suggest a low cost, good defensive catcher.
I have to presume you're; in a dh league, but that still means hafner or carlos lee is in the field...an everyday adventure most of us wouldn't risk, especially with that 3 in centerfield escobar, who alot of people love, but is a 15-game injury waiting to happen. fielding 3's at both ss and 2b isn't helping your pitchers either, atleast get a good defensive backup middle infielder like c.izturis or n. perez to come in late in games.
finally, immedietly junk sele and get the cash for him, and I'd combine him and penny to get the cash and replace with a sometime, less than a 1million dollar starter to couple with villanueva for that 5th starter. set your settings so that villanueva gets in as much as possible in long relief when he's not starting, maximize his innings.
and lastly...you could use lh help in your bullpen. sherrill's a great bargain, but best use for just an inning against lh hitters only in the 8th or 9th.

So you don't think getting rid of Carpenter to get some cash to spend is a good idea, and you think Zito is ok as my 4th starter? Also how do you set VILLANUEVA'S setting to start and come in for relief? Thanks bud!

Don't get rid of Carpenter, you have to be in dire straights for it to be worth dumping a salary that large. If you're deadset against him, trade him, but he's one of the better pitchers in the set.

In my limited '07 experience I've not seen Zito excel. I don't mind his card, but with your defense his whip will be a problem. Having said that, you'll have trouble finding equal value in the FA market -- particularly for a *. Take meat's advise on Sele and picking up an under a dollar starter.
