Maxiimizing the set-up and closer role

Maxiimizing the set-up and closer role

Postby STEVEPONEDAL » Thu Oct 04, 2007 4:51 pm

I want to make sure I have my settings correct in order to maximize my set-up and closers role.

In the manager’s setting I have:

Closer usage: Maximize

Relief Usage: Aggressive

Setup man: Sanchez on both

Closer: Rodriquez on both

Intentional Walk: Aggressive

Individual Cards

Sanchez: Avoid LHB, Slow Hook, Avoid using during blowout, Avoid before 7th inning, Max of 2 to 3 IP.

Rodriquez: Avoid LHB, Slow Hook, Avoid using during blowout, Avoid before 8th inning, Max of 1 to 2 innings.

My other relievers are set to Quick Hook and max at 1 to 2 IP.

Should this result in maximizing Sanchez’s and Rodriquez’s use?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure that if you have Sanchez and Rodriquez avoid lefty hitters, then they will and you will have someone else face lefties both for setup and closer roles. Otherwise you should accomplish your apparent goal of having those two used in the setup and closer roles against righty batters, respectively. Should you desire one (Sanchez) to face both lefty and righty batters and the other (Rodriquez) to face both lefty and righties, then do not avoid lefties, because the other settings as described will work well.

I think you also might want to take off the avoid using before 7th inning for Sanchez, as he should be able to eat up a lot of middle innings for you. Also, for all others except for your main 2, put mop up only so they won't be used often. This way Sanchez and K Rod will get all the important innings.

"Maximize" closer is a misleading setting name. What it means is "use only in closer situations." So it "maximizes" the ratio of saves to IP, but if you want to "maximize" IP itself, then you shouldn't use it.

I wouldn't recommend putting everyone else besides these two on mop-up. That will confuse the hell out of the computer whenever your starter doesn't get you into the 7th with a lead, and/or one of the two is tired... so, y'know, dozens of times per season, even if you're a good team.

You just have too many settings in general -- the general rule is to have as [i:b6c830f3a2]few[/i:b6c830f3a2] settings as possible. Assuming that you don't mind Sanchez and K-Rod facing both lefties and righties, and that your main goal is to get them the most IP, I'd put closer normal, K-Rod closer both ways, Sanchez set-up both ways, slow hook and avoid during blowout on the two of them, mop-up on your worst reliever, avoid L/R on any of the other relievers who are very one-sided (I would try to avoid having such relievers at all in this setup), and that's it.

This has been a great help.

DeanTSC, thanks for all your studies and posts.

Anyone have any thoughts on the use of IBB in hitter's park?

Depends, if you have a pitching staff with high WHIPS or high ballpark HR, I would set it as low as possible.

I don't like IBBs anywhere; I set them to extra conservative, and set each individual pitcher to IBB less. I think it's generally not a useful play (when managing seasons "head-to-head" against the computer, I found myself only doing it 10-15 times a year even in non-DH leagues,) and in the hands of HAL, who is particularly bad at knowing when to use it (yes, even worse than he is at other things,) it goes from "hardly ever useful" to "useless." I can't back that up with any solid evidence; just my opinion.

I already agreed with Dean in another thread, and here I am doing it again. I'm not quite as extreme as he is; I usually set IBB to conservative and only check "IBB less with this pitcher" on a few select pitchers.

I remember Mark Belanger for my team in a 70s league was a league leader in being intentionally walked. I believe that year I did start using extra conservative for my pitchers!

I also hate IBB's. I have every pitcher set at IBB less and lowest possible in manager setting. I have 2 IBB in 105 games so far this league and think I gave up 4 in a full season last time. I do this because I hate giving batters a free pass to get around. Earn it. Thank you for the tip on closer max I didn't know that and will change it right away. :o   and :D
