1986: Take Two

Postby LMBombers » Thu Nov 15, 2007 12:46 pm

I agree. The "excitement" of this new game is already starting to fade since we don't have access to this game or even a timeframe of when we might get it either. This actual season will take 6 months to complete and then the playoffs start. There is no way that the hype around this game will last that long.

The new card set with a possibility of having more teams in a league and other options that have been discussed is very exciting. However with no timeframe of a release date or announcement of what options we will eventually have it is very discouraging at this point.

Other than Doug Glanville's blogs, I really haven't even paid any attention to what's going on in the league.

Guess this is how my wife feels when I tell her "I made the playoffs" or "so-and-so went 5 for 5 with 3 hrs", when I took about my SOM games

One thing to keep in mind is that this "event" is an outreach to get folks into SOM who might not have heard about it or thought to look into TSN's version.

Sure. To the likeness of us seasoned SOM players, it looks aweful and un-exciting because only 1 game a night takes place and it's not even your own team.

As Bernie says in his original post...

[quote:843970cd8f]Why are we doing this? Besides the fact that it'll be a heck of a fun time, we'd simply like to bring a lot more attention to Strat-O-Matic and hopefully infuse our community with new managers. With the talent that we have slated to manage the 26 teams (including one current and one former Major Leaguer, prominent radio hosts, and popular writers), we think that just about anyone who's interested in baseball will be talking about us this offseason.

Think about that feeling you had the first time you either played SOM all your life with just dice and local friends and stumbled into the TSN SOM world. What about that first night's game you played and how long you looked at those box scores? This season being played is getting more people to eventually join our community. It was not designed initially to entertain those of us in our fourms.

Do we all want to play these cards? Hell yeah. Is it easier for me to write this because I have the Padres? Yes, but it does not make my post any less genuine.

All I know is, slow or not, I am rooting for the Padres and A's! :) Represent!

I think TSN's attempt at mass promotion of the 1986 league across the country using media people & a couple of real players as managers is great. I hope they bring in lots of new people to this great game.

That being said, I don't understand why it has to be available ONLY to this one league for now. What does it hurt if the rest of us are playing regular 1986 leagues behind the scenes of this event? Thats the part I don't get.

Some of the people that this league is reaching out to may hear about it and come to the site to try to play the '86 game and not be able to as well. Sure they could end up playing other games but they probably came here to try and play the game they are hearing all the buzz about.

I see your point Sykes, but also having TSN's promotion they had back in the 2001 game:

[quote:c6038ceeda]Invite Your Friends and Earn BIG Rewards When They Sign Up!
For each friend not yet signed up for this game that signs up when you invite them to play, you will earn $3 towards a future Strat-O-Matic Baseball or Football team! So if you get 5 people to join that weren't already playing, you get $15 of credit towards Strat-O-Matic online products![/quote:c6038ceeda]

also helps. This probably would help promote the game too. IMHO, this promotion SHOULD be every season.

That's really funny! I just got done telling my girlfriend about how I think I will win my division for the first time and how it will happen. She was  :? and :) . When I made the wildcard for the first time and told her I won 2 credits for winning it all she was :D and thought it was 8-) . All she really heard was I just saved $50.
