There were a number of HAL mistakes that compounded to cause this gross error in judgment. The first one was in fact in the previous game, which was a complete blowout, 1-19. I was annihilated. But in the last 2 2/3 innings, HAL uses my setup man Troy Percival, thereby (I assume) rendering him ineligible for the next game, which was this one. Okay. Maybe. However, Matt Guerrier is very smartly brought in to face three big righties - Zimmerman, Jeter, and Thomas. He walks Zimmerman to load the bases but is then TAKEN OUT for BRETT MYERS! He of the 'mop up' and 'avoid righties' tag! In.ex.cus.a.ble. This should never, EVER happen, and frankly is simply a bug in HAL's code. Nevermind that he actually struck Jeter out. Also, I had Teixeira on the DL so I had a 1B-2 defensive replacement (Ross Gload), precisely for this situation. Marlon Anderson should absolutely positively not have been at first as soon as the score got close. If he had been replaced defensively, there is a very strong chance that the error would not have been made at 1B, despite HAL's other missteps. This, too is probably a bug in HAL's code, can players be replaced defensively mid-inning? If not, it would be a very good thing to add - as it can completely swing the outcomes of games, and really, what's the point of tagging a player to be removed defensively with a lead, and tagging the defensive replacement as the guy to be replaced, if it's not going to happen?
Anyway. Lots of inexcusable missteps on HAL in this game. Usually HAL is excellent (it even adjusts my lineup in between games when players get hurt!) But whoever codes HAL should probably should take a look. I understand that this is a pretty unique situation, but hey, why not strive for perfection.
