That is definitely odd. In the 70s game, HAL arbitrarily put in my backup catcher around the 7th inning for no reason whatsoever. Only happened once, and I haven't seen anything like that (or like your situation) happen any other time. And, of course, in my situation at least my sub played the position he was put at. (Never mind he grounded into a double play to end the game!)
