When to cut an injured player?

Postby JdEarly » Wed May 28, 2008 6:37 pm

I am always opposed to making the cut, even in this situation. You have Tex on your team instead of Adrian Gonzalez, in the first place, because you thought he was a better fit. You're going to want that better fit come playoff time, I'm sure. Teahen is no one's number one choice at 1B, but in a pinch I think he'll do fine for you. I think cutting Tex would be hastey and wasteful, kind of a knee-jerk reaction that will have you kicking yourself later. Hang onto him.

JD Early,
I really do appreciate your input! I think I am going to stay with Teahan, and Texiara. But I am less worried about what is going to happen IF I make the playoffs, and I am more worried about just making the playoffs. That is always my first goal(to just make the playoffs)! Then, if I do make the playoffs of course I want to win. Thanks,

I think he was just a visitor in our world and he has ascended to another plane.

Maybe he has gone on an inter-galactic planetary journey with Bender Bending Rodiriguez.

rm, do NOT cut him. You've got to look at it this way. The greatest players in the game are worth about 15 wins over a lousy replacement level player over the course of a full 162 game season. So, one extra marginal win over a ten game period approximately. You are up 2 games with Teixeira to miss 14. No way he's worth 2 full team wins more than Teahen over that timeframe. The Best players in the game arent worth that over a replacement level player, and Tex isnt one of the very best and Teahen isnt quite replacement level. Plus you want the best team possible for the postseason if you get there, and Tex is a marginal upgrade over A.Gonz. Stand pat.

My last post was worded awkwardly but the point is that the downgrade from Tex to Teahen wont cost you 2 full games in the standings over that 14 game period. Therefore, you're better off riding it out and having Tex over Gonz the rest of the season, including the possible postseason. It's too early to cut him, and the downgrade isnt big enough to singlehandedly cost you your lead in the meantime.

It's too late to help here, but here's a simple rule when deciding to cut an injured player (or any player you're not sure about for that matter):

Step 1. See if you are in my division. If YES, cut the player.
Step 2. Otherwise, keep the player.

I hope this will help others with an agonizing decision whether to make a cut or not. However, this rule does not apply to mystery card games before the half-way mark. In these cases, simply reverse the rule.

Team Nasty,
I appreciate the words of advice! I did not cut Texiara. So far Teahan is 6 for 13. But I am now only one game up for the division. Thanks, to everyone who provided advice!
