tie breaker clarification

Postby MFL536 » Fri May 01, 2009 10:32 am

hopefully someone can confirm for me before tonight's games
situation is this
west east
team c 93-66 team A 86-73 has 10-11 rec vs team B
my team 86-73 team B 83-73 has 11-10 rec vs team A
team d 76-83

my record is 8-4 vs A and 4-8 vs B if I lose my 3 games tonight I will be
86-76 if team B beats team A 3 games they both will be 86-76 but team A would get the division because they would be 14-10 h-h vs A then for the wildcard I would get it vs team A because h-h I am 8-4 vs team A
I am looking for confirmation because I want to sit some players who tend to get injured so I don't possibly lose them before the playoffs start central is not a factor 1st place is 87-72 2nd is 81-78

Tiebreakers for a 2-way tie are, in order:
- Head-to-head record
- Run differential
- Coin flip
Tiebreakers for a 3-way tie are, in order:
- Best record vs. teams within division
- Run differential
- Coin flip

I don't follow your example very well but here is what it is. If there are two teams tied for the wild card or the division you first look at H2H records. If that is tied then it goes to the team with the higher run differential for the season (not in those H2H games only).

If there is a 3 way tie then you can toss out the H2H records as they are meaningless. This first tie-breaker is record vs teams in your own division. It doesn't matter if some of the teams that are tied are from different divisions. If there is still a tie then it goes to best run differential.

If three teams are tied for the wild card and it happens that two of those teams are tied for the division lead as well you first do a two team tie-breaker to determine the division champ. At that point you only have two teams left that are tied for the wild card so you would then do another two team tie-breaker for the wild card with the remaining two teams. A 3 team tie-breaker would not be used in that example. Clear as mud?

format of my example did not come out as I typed it basically here it is
I am in the west 86-73 there are 2 teams in the east A is 86-73 B is 83-76 and they play each other tonight.obviously the only hope for B 83-76 team is to sweep A they would then be tied at 86-76 if I lose all 3 I would also be 86-76 A&B are now tied for the eastern div champ B would win because h-h B is 14-10 vs A . I would then be in a 2 way tie with A for the wild card at 86-76 h-h I lead 8-4 there is not a 3 way tie for any playoff spot basically only a 2 way for east champ then a 2way tie for wildcard so head to head would be the tie breaker right
maybe I should just not rest anyone take my chances on the injuries and just win 1 to make sure

A can't be playing B since they have already played 24 times if the H2H record is 14-10. Bottom line is...The only team you could tie with for the wild card spot is A (if B won the season series over A) and you have a H2H advantage so you have clinched a spot. Rest your under 600 PA guys or risk losing them for the playoffs for nothing.
