Clueless on a point in Weighted Waiver Process

I am in my first Auto Draft league and just got my team results. Less than half the players I requested, but the replacements aren't bad.

I digress.

I am no putting in claims for 8 players on waivers. I see the following note on the bottom of the waiver list.

Question: Right now, during the waiver selection period, there is no option for me to "Drop" a player to make roster AND salary room for the ones I am claiming. They would break the bank without me dropping -- or trading -- players.

I assume that once the waivers claims are dispersed and offered for "processing" by each team, I would THEN be able to add dropped players to the list in order to get down to my roster size limit AND money limit.

Again, as my success here thus far would indicate, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

You pair up each waiver selection with someone to drop -- the computer does the math: first adds the value of the dropped player to your remaining bankroll, then subtracts the value of the player selected. You have to plan accurately, so that after every pair there remains cash in your bankroll. When a waiver claim fails, however, the player selected to be dropped remains on your roster, so you won't get credit for his value; in practice, this doesn't screw things up too badly so long as you pick high value players to drop in the first couple rounds (and thus keep positive cash in your bankroll).

Note that your first choice should always work unless someone picks your choice ahead of you in the first round. That is, in your first choice you are aware of the exact math involved: your bankroll, plus the value of the player dropped, minus the value of the player selected, equals cash remaining in your bankroll (or break even).

The next picks should each work, too, so long as no one else chooses the same player ahead of you; in each case, you can figure what your bankroll will be after every pair, to make sure it always ends up positive (or break even). Again, the uinknown factor is a failed claim, causing your dropped player to remain on your roster.

So you click on the free agent you want. That takes you to your team page. There is a message on top that says you have the option of dropping one of your current players for the claimed player or just adding the free agent without dropping anyone. After you do one of those 2 things you are then sent to your waiver claims page.

Get out paper and pencil and do the math on the salaries for your claimed and current players to ensure you have enough money for all of your claims to process keeping in mind your cash.

Ahhh. Thank you guys. So, you can really screw the pooch by allowing yourself to go over your 100M limit, and that could reject all of your claims going forward. Groan.

I have first pick in the waivers which helps a LOT.

I already have 12 Million in the kitty :) So, if I want a 7 million dollar guy, I don't need to drop ANYone. I am just left with 5 million after that.

As long as I stay ahead of my money, great.

AND, I assume that if I have money left over at the end of the waivers process, that leaves me with a kitty to claim other free agents.

Boy, this is SOME learning experience.

You will also want to be online when waivers happens if possible as there is a mini-frenzy usually as people are picking up players that other teams may have dropped or picking up replacements for players they didn't get during waivers.

I go through my waiver list with a calculator and make sure each waiver pick will work in terms of cash, starting with the amount you have before the waiver period. Then add the salary of each guy you plan to drop as you add to your waiver list. Then subtract the salary of the guy you want in the waiver. Don't be afraid to use the reorder waiver priority function when you change your mind about waiver picks.

I'm not sure anyone mentioned this, but you are able to drop 1 player from your 25 man roster before waivers.

If you have any waiver claims left over when set up the ones you want, you can use them to hedge your bets; ie, if you placed a waiver for a CFer but fear you might not get him, add a claim at the end of your list for your second choice. If you get your first choice, great, but if you don't you'd still have that cash to try for your second choice.
