HAL - Game engine card read error results in loss

Postby LANCEBOUSLEY » Tue Jan 12, 2010 11:27 pm

hmmm... perhaps you are right in reality, however it reads as a double (in whatever form), i think you are giving the programming of the game credit for waaaayyyy more sophistication that it has.

and yes i do agree with you that that level of sophistication would be nice, so i am not defending HAL merely pointing out it's current limitations.

btw. the hr1-2 doubl3 3-20 goes to cf according to the rules as well. so that would have been in the gap off the wall. again appears to be one of the inconsistencies we live with with HAL. but it would apply equally to all.

Oh! oh! Feels like another thread that won't die on its own...

BTW, in addition to guarding the lines, there is also the "Pitch-around strategy" available in the computer.

Anyone seen its effect?

[quote:e3b70a5d45]Now's the perfect time to use the new "Pitch-Around" strategy! This strategy will cut the offensive player's power and batting average down dramatically. However, using this strategy will also dramatically increase the chances that you will walk the batter.

The pitch around strategy may only be used from the 7th inning on when there are 2 outs, first base is open and the tying or go-ahead run is on base or at bat. When the pitch around option is available the message "PitchAround" or "PA" will appear on the screen around the pitcher's mound. To pitch around a batter click on the icon used for intentional walks or select the "Int Walk or Pitch Around" menu item. You will then be asked if you wish to intentionally walk or pitch around the batter.[/quote:e3b70a5d45]

Yes, guarding the lines is in effect, and that's almost certainly what this was. It's a similar rule to playing the outfield in - you do it when in the late innings when you absolutely need to prevent the run.

I understand your point about the illogic of a double (rf) turning into a gb (3b)... though akindian is correct that the game engine doesn't execute this rule with that in mind. It doesn't stop to think where the ball was theoretically hit; it simply cuts some doubles, and increases singles.

My question is why would you be guarding the lines with the winning run at second? Guarding the lines is usually done when trying to prevent the batter from getting into scoring position. The batter was irrelevent in this situation.

Bases were empty both times when "guarding the line" came into effect.
