Don't relieve before settings

Postby bucktide » Mon Jan 25, 2010 10:01 am

It has been awhile since I have played SOM and I see we have new pitching setting which I like. The one I am struggling with is the Don't Relieve Before. I have clicked on the link but still donnot have a good feel for it. Can I get a few examples how it works. Can I just not chose any of the asetting or will this mess me up? What is the average setting from F1-F9??? Any insight would be appreciated. FYI - I am in a 24 team league for 1999 with a poor SP staff and strong Bullpen with Wagner clsoing pitching at Cinergy (avg park). Thanks

I think the "don't relieve before" settings are better used with high quality pitchers because those are the ones you want to get the most mileage out of. Every pitcher starts with a fatigue rating of F9, and progresses towards F0 as he gets tired. Usually, this does not happen until the 5th, 6th, or 7th inning, but it all depends on that pitcher's "point of fatigue". As he drops below F9, his effectiveness is reduced, though exactly how no one seems to know.

You can see in this box score as an example of how the fatigue rating may go in an individual game, and how it affects managerial decisions.

You just have to play around with it and get a feel for how quickly guys get fatigued and what level of performance you are willing to accept. Look around on the forum for other threads about this topic, as it has been discussed quite thoroughly.

With this particular staff you have, I would set most, if not all, starters to quick hook and set the bullpen to aggressive. You don't want those 1M and 2M starters hanging around. I wouldn't even bother the "don't relieve before" settings in this case.

Thanks for the feedback. I already had the starters on quickhook and aggressive Bullpen. I was not sur about the F rating but like you said, I do not think it will matter. Let's hope my team hits and the starters kick it close until we get to the pen.
