Switch Hitters

I had a quick question - do switch hitters always hit on the opposite side of the pitcher (i.e. LH versus RH and vice versa), or do they bat what is more advantageous always (i.e. LH against 1-9R, RH against 1-9L). I don't really know, but it seems like it could make a lot of differences in the game.
