HAL trippin' on a defensive replacement

HAL trippin' on a defensive replacement

OK. Munson gets injured, leaving me with 1 catcher, Vic Correll (a 4(+2) scrub). Late in a game, HAL decides that since Correll is marked as "remove for defensive replacement," that apparently is an imperitive. Because Jerry Royster (sort of the definition of "not a catcher") is brought in to play catcher late in the game. Correll is fine...he's not hurt, he's a catcher, he's playing catcher, he doesn't get pinch hit for or pinch run for, he just gets taken out in favor of Royster. Note that Royster not only is not a catcher, he's not even listed among the defensive replacement choices for the positions he DOES play. Why in the world would HAL do that? Do non-catchers somehow have better arms/ranges/passed-balll/error ratings than 4(+2) guys?

wtf?

(I really want to know actually, because it makes me think I should never mark people to be replaced defensively)

you have him checked for remove for defensive sub. That means it will remove him THEN look for a defensive sub. If you don't have a sub for him, your fault.

Why would you have your only backup C set to remove for def sub is the question??

Thank you, this is exactly the kind of explanation I needed. I assumed that command would only be issued if there was a better defensive option on the bench. Now I understand that isn't how it goes.

I had Vic set that way as an artifact from earlier in the season when I had 2 backup catchers, one of whom was better defensively. I will now remove the replace check on this player.

Same thing happened to me last night. Palmiero goes down for 3 games and Gonzalez goes to 1B from RF and Gilkey moves to RF. I have Hyer on the bench 1B 3 and he stays there. I also have him to replace for def sub. Thank you again. Mike

It would be nice if a player wasn't replaced by a worse fielder. If a key player gets injured or previously used in the game, it's easy to get burned.
