Opinions wanted from 1999 veterans

I am a little shocked, the auction league team I thought might be my biggest failure, after missing the players I wanted most, then playing and spending most of the year in last, I stormed into the playoffs in the last 3rd of the season and then won the championship. Take a look at this team, and tell me, did this team actually belong, or was I just very lucky?

Here is my team: http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/stratomatic/team/team_other.html?user_id=249663
and here are the other teams that made the playoffs

I've only played in 80mil leagues, but have won with similar players, so I have to say that it was not a fluke.

I don't think it was necessarily a fluke. You got some great performances out of a couple of platoons, and that is often key in live drafts or any no-salary cap leagues. Your 1b platoon of Durazo and Jaha probably outperformed McGuire. The Catchers did awesome. You were pretty lucky to get 667 ABs out of Piazza and it was a perfect park for him. But nobody really went hog wild and outperformed his card. Your pitching was just good enough and you outscored your opponents by over 125 runs and outhomered them by 60+, so you probably should have won more than you did in the regular season.

I'd say well earned.

You were pretty lucky with your stolen base percentage!

In the '99 game, there are plenty of players. Even in an $80 league, when the teams are set there are still enough players left over for another decent team or two. Since you were in a live league, there were even more players you could use after missing on who you wanted(Piazza and Tatis are not too shabby though-both close to the best at their position and excellent for your park), and you took advantage of it by grabbing the high priced platoon guys. I have won in Tiger once or twice and it seems to be all about out slugging your opponents with decent defense and pitching, which you did. Once you make the playoffs, match ups are very important and almost anybody can win if the matchups are in their favor.

One thing that strikes me is that I never would have used John Johnstone at Tigers. Watching him give up 42 dingers in relief would have driven me nuts. I'll bet just about anything he lead the league in blown saves (17) and losses in relief (14). Obviously, he's a terrible park match. But maybe in a live draft there wasn't much left.
