The Expensive Bullpen Strategy: Does it Suck?

Postby RICHARDMILTER » Thu Aug 12, 2010 12:17 am

I would never spend more than 4 million on a closer in a 80 million dollar league. They don't pitch enough innings. The SOM cards do not feel the pressure a real closer feels. I win all the time with sub 3 million dollar closers. And if anything I would spend a little more on a setup man, they get more innings.

Here is the link to a team I have where I've gone the whole year without one reliever over 1 mil. So far the team is 90-66 and has the second best record in the league (unfortunately the best record is in my division and has 100 wins so far).

I wish I could figure out how to make the sub-$1M reliever strategy work...I've drafted it, then panicked before the season started cause it just looked so weak.

So really I just haven't given it a fair trial (or, I guess, any trial!).

I think gpot generally puts tough teams together too...I'm gonna try to leach onto his strategy!

HERE IS MY TWO SENSE

Postby guardman9 » Thu Aug 12, 2010 11:17 am

FOR 20XX LEAGUES: I agree with this strategy and has always worked for me even when my teams just plain suck. I budget 10 to 11 mil for 5 RPs in the 80mil leagues.

Closer (must be a 5 or 6, no more than 4mil and if i go with all righty starters, the closer gotta be a lefty)

Set-up- 2-3 mil and oppisite arm than my closer, always a RP2 and usually really really low HRs, dont care about a mediocre whip

Set-up- 1-2 mil on the same arm as the closer, same rules, RP2, really really low HRs

RR specialist, RP 1 and under a mil (this one you gotta look at the card, some of those specialists with 5 eras and 1.5 whips are pretty studly for the side you need)

LL specialist, same as RR

FOR 70'S AND 80'S LEAGUES: haha bullpen? we dont need no stinckin bullpen?

4 max for sure, if you have a chance take the RP3 or RP4 studs and pay 750K for the rest. Sometimes il start with two studs at 5-7 mil with 3 duds and move to one stud and 2-3 duds during the season. Check out this bullpen ffrom my 80s team :)

I usually don't give that strategy a fair shot either, I love making moves so I usually change the direction of my roster 15 times before the season starts. I just found another team of mine where I did the same thing (no relievers over $1 mil) and it's working there as well too. This team is a little different as it's a hella-good defensive team, but still . . .

I'm thinking there is a disconnect here: The original comments were made way before SuperHal Bullpen 2, which makes many of the concerns in the 2006 posts obsolete.

Just a note.
