Salary Cap enforcement in live drafts

Salary Cap enforcement in live drafts

Postby wavygravy2k » Wed May 18, 2011 2:10 pm

Just so you know, I haven't had much experience with live drafts. The last time I participated in a live draft was when the 1986 card set was free for a limited time. Live drafts without a salary cap didn't really appeal to me but it was free. I also participated in the 2005 Players Championship. I remember it was a nightmare trying to get everyone to setup their proxys.

I haven't really kept track of how "theme" leagues generally handle live drafts with salary caps but I'd be interested to find out. What happens when a manager has gone over the salary cap. Do they lose the pick that made them cap out? What happens to subsequent picks? Or, is it just as simple as making sure he get's back under $80 million before the season starts?

By the way, here's the current Development Status on live drafts with salary cap support:

[quote:78d5ff9ca4]One day we may be able to add a display that tells you how much money you've spent and have left, but the problem is that there's no good way to enforce a salary cap. I posed this problem to the community on the forums and no one could offer a good solution. [/quote:78d5ff9ca4]

I'm hoping we can start a discussion on how to enforce the salary cap for live drafts

I've been working on a GM script that automatically fills the page that is used for auto drafts (choosing players page). What you do is join a live mock draft (http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/stratomatic/livedraft/mock_draft_home.html). When a player is picked in the mock draft go to the 'choosing players' page and refresh the screen. The page will automatically fill up with the players you picked. This allows you to check how much cash is remaining and the average you can spend.

I've been brainstorming on how to handle picks that are over the cap. At the moment, the script will stop processing when the 'Average You can spend' goes below 1M. Conceivably, I could probably have the script start auto picking minimum wage players via the 'choosing players' page when the average amount goes below 1M but this could introduce a lot a problems, I imagine. Anyone have any thoughts on how this can be handled?

Just so everyone knows, I'm not trying to replace agabriel's http://www.diamonddope.com live draft site. I was just brainstorming one day and came up with a personal challenge. It's fun to work on these scripts even if nobody decides to use them. Big thanks to Bernie for resurrecting the Mock Live Draft site. In regards to agabriel's live draft site, I could also probably integrate this script to work with his site as well if he's willing and others are interested.

Right now, the script seems to be working with the 2010 and BTH 90s card sets without any major glitches. I should be able to share the script if anyone is interested in trying it out. You would need to purchase a team in order to have access to the "choosing players" page (see below)

There needs to be a flag set up in the system in that if drafting a player causes the average amount you can spend per player to drop below .50 (or .75, depending on the game), then you can not draft that player.
As long as the average you can spend stays above the minimum salary of players available, then you're good.
Any players drafted that would cause the average you can spend to dip below the minimum salary would be grayed out or removed from the list for that manager so they can not be drafted.
