Just finalized a very weird team. Predict my results

[quote:c4fc7cb9d6="Jake Squid"]My opinions:

You've spent way too much for what you're getting at C. You're paying $8.37 ($8.37!!) for good OBP, no power and myeh defense. You can do better for less and use that to improve 2B, SS and/or 1B.

I like Phillips at 2B, but only as the right handed half of a platoon. Flannery works great for the other half.

SS - I'm ambivalent. You're done at the position against RHP when Gagne goes down. Is Guillen available? He's cheap w/ decent defense and anything is better than Espinoza against RHP.

I haven't seen Smith do well, unlike you. For a SP in the same range, I really like Power.

If they're available, Traber/Balboni make a great platoon at 1B for the same price as Tabler. You'll get 40+ HR & 100+ RBI out of them.

Depending on what's available in the SP market, you might want to trade Scott in to improve the back 1/2+ of your rotation. Guys like Show, Ryan, Sebra and McGaffigan are good values, imho. If you feel comfortable with Smith/Stewart/John, ignore this.[/quote:c4fc7cb9d6]

I hear you but I'm not going to catch Ortiz at all except when Scioscia is hurt. Ortiz is my DH.

Best available SS is Wilkerson. I signed him but he is a 3e34. That was the best defensive SS available under $6. All the horrible bats with good defense were taken. I had Templeton but traded him for Franco before waivers assuming I could replace him.

Traber and Balboni are taken. I thought about getting rid of Scott as I could get two solid SP for him cost wise. I could sign DeLeon and one average guy. All the SP's you mentioned are off the board. I just think that I'm better off having Scott then DeLeon and a marginal upgrade over Smith, Stewart or John. I'm pretty happy with John and Stewart. I have never had Smith before. I targeted him early and am attached to seeing what he can do this season.

Flannery isn't available and I don't have the money for him anyway.

I am not nearly as worried about my lack of power as I am about my fielding. Part of the reason I don't want to drop Scott is I think I need K's from my pitching to help strand base runners.

As you can see with some of my cheaper staffs, your ballpark will help them ALOT...

That's exciting. Based on your stats and common players the common links I have are.

Mike Scott 25-15 2.37 ERA

Ortiz over 3 seasons averaged .325
Tabler .319
Gwynn .334
Rice .315

I also have Boggs on my team who will hit at least .330
Espinoze will hit .350 or higher vs LHP
I also expect Phillips to hit close to .300 vs LHP

My projected stats vs LHP for top 6 of my order based on that:

Gwynn .334
Espinoza .350
Boggs .340
Rice .315
Ortiz .325
Tabler .319
Phillips .280 (vs LHP)
Lynn 1L
Scioscia E

That means more than normal in my division as 6 of 13 projected starters are LHP. Even without power I think that lineup will score. My team is pretty slow and might set a record for DP's hit into based on their projected high OBP and their cards have a ton of GBA's.

Like all except SS & 1B ... Overall that's a B or B+ lineup at the very least!

after all the feedback about Scoscia I pulled the plug. I dropped him and added Melvin as a backup catcher. I moved Ortiz to starting catcher. I signed Davis to be my DH.

You've done well in '86 already, so you obviously have a style that works. It's just different than my style.

Also, anything apolivka has to say should be taken seriously. He really knows his stuff.

I think pulling the plug on Scott was a good move, and DeLeon has always done well for me. A little concerned about Ortiz as full time catcher. I've actually had success with the "let 'em run" strategy (and even using Ortiz personally in pitcher's parks) but that was with much better team defense:

Even with your potent offense, runs will be more scarce than you might think, and having all those steals could hurt you. You said, however, that your division isn't all that full of speedsters, so maybe it will work out.

Trammel won't put up great (or even good) numbers at the dome, but he's solid and will make up for it by being a 2 and having good speed himself.

Not a huge fan of Alvin Davis. In that same price range I would have liked someone like Easler, Leach or Brock with more hits and doubles and less walks. Even a guy like Law might have been a better pick at RH DH.

If I were you, I would close with both Smith and Franco. Set your roles so that setup and closer are primary for the best matchup each night. Then set the other guy for primary middle and secondary setup. Check every night for who would be best in that role. You want 70% of your relief innings going to those two guys.

Good luck!

That makes sense. Right now I have it set up so Smith is the primary closer. Franco the closer vs L. Snell the Closer vs R. Then Franco as the second primary Closer.

I will look closer at the relief roles I have setup. I really like Snell's card in my park and want to use him at home a lot. Snell won't see the field on the road.

I will look into what you said about Davis. See if I can find an alternative as it is only a 5% penalty right now. I agree Trammell won't hit well but I just couldn't live with the terrible defense both at C and SS. I thought it would cost too many games. I'm not comfortable at all with Ortiz as the full-time catcher but I have him set to be pulled for a defensive replacement late in games.

I really appreciate your help. Rough first night for me as my team didn't hit at all. Got a big 3-26 from Boggs and Gwynn lol.
