I realize that socalchiro, I am not jacking you up, it is that I was lectured by Geekor and a bunch of guys one time because I questioned why HAL brought in a pinch hitter who had a low BA but high HR ratio in the 9th over a .300 singles hitter and said geez why did he do that "I was one run down, don't we need a base runner here?" and they told me that HAL is pretty sophisticated on these switches that HAL evaluates each potential hitter based on OPS. If that is true then HAL knows that Pujols is a monster. He has one of the highest OPS and Slugging % in the deck.
I think it was a bad read, the code has cracks here in my judgement. If one RH looks as good to HAL as the next, then IBB has no meaning. You have to be able to differentiate a batter who can hurt you versus a banjo hitter. YOu always walk the one and pitch to the other. It shakes me up that HAL could possibly be this simple minded here. My point is, the message seems to be hey just have a bunch of weenies on your roster and as long as you got a lot of RH and LH and switch combos you'll be fine.
You know I want to be clear here, there are times HAL makes great logical moves. It is on those ocassions that I can see the potential of this engine, it is great, there is excitemnet in the matching of wits, "And the wheels are turning..." as Vince Scully says, so it is always amazing to me that in the midst of all of that AI thinking that HAL can't see to walk Pujols and have the picther face better matches after him. That's the point.
