This is luckymans take on B. Roberts (whom I have yet to use):
---Brian Roberts 11.12M
Anyone who remembers that 2001 Alomar was paid 7.66M must probably say to himself that "no chance that I'll spend 11M on Roberts".
Okay, now calm down. First, Alomar was wildly underpriced. Let's agree that Alomar and Roberts should be worth around 9.5M-10M. If Roberts is indeed 1M overpaid, can he be of any use?
I definitively think he can. Particularly in Petco. Because the downgrade in Petco probably costs more than 1.5M to the sluggers. In other words, if you have 6M left to spend on your Petco team, instead of buying your fifth closer, or buying a slugger, it will probably make more sense to upgrade with Roberts and have your good cheapies occupy the rest of the diamond. Furthermore, there are some interesting upsides with having Roberts, other than his defense. First, you have one of the best hitter in the top of your line-up, which maximize the overall value of the line-up. Second, his card vs rhp remains a solid rbi threat, with productive extrabases hits at 4, 5, and 6. He thus remains an excellent rbi producer in Petco, contrary to some other players.
My take: Overpaid? yeah, probably...but you know, in life you have to make choices, and 80M in Petco is a lot of money to invest when you want to avoid paying for homeruns....
