Informal Poll: More Play by Play Detail?

Informal Poll: More Play by Play Detail?

Postby bleacher_creature » Fri May 12, 2006 2:18 pm

Please vote for one of the four:

1. More detail please.

2. Less Detail please, a box score would be plenty.

3. Keep it as it is.

4. Don't know.

Here is a typical inning (from the '69 game):

[quote:946ae30111]*** BOTTOM OF INNING 9 ***
SUBSTITUTE P - Diego Segui
SUBSTITUTE 2B- Billy Grabarkewitz
SUBSTITUTE 1B- Bill White
SUBSTITUTE 3B- Wayne Garrett
0 R.Jackson 6 Ground Out b-0
1 S.Bando 4 Walk b-1
1 1 A.Shamsky 6 Single 1-2 b-1
1 12 T.Agee 1 Fly Out b-0
SUBSTITUTE PH- John Roseboro
2 12 J.Roseboro 6 Fly Out b-0 [/quote:946ae30111]

When R. Jackson grounded out, I thouht, "gee...I wonder to whom he hit the grounder?"

It doesn't seem like a big deal, but I have a crappy infield defense in this team, and as you can see I have basically a late inning "defensive unit" that jogs out onto the field. I wonder which one fielded the ball.

This isn't even a good example. I'm sure others could post situations where the extra info would really affect your future management decisions.

It's my opinion that Strat/SOM wants to keep the results as simple as possible, which doesn't really serve the core regulars. As we have discussed before, this is probably one of the EASIEST improvements that could be made, since the details are readily available in the CD ROM game.

Since the game is not in real time or very interactive, and all we get is this abbreviated detail, it doesn't seem like we'd be asking for the world to get more. Such as:

6-4-3 Double Play!

How hard is that?

I'd love to hear the case against more detail...

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: we don't make an effort to make things artificially simple or remove detail from the game. This is actually not one of the easiest improvements that can be made. I do dream of expanding the play-by-play, in fact, far beyond what it is now - but I have other higher priorities to work on first.

Bernie -

I know you have more pressing matters.

I wonder what happened in the translation from the CD ROM engine to TSN?nThat's funky IMO that they would remove that detail.

I know you find this topic annoying too BTW.

Heh, everything's annoying to me right now, it's my spring allergies. :)

Nothing was removed. I don't know that part of the code too well, but I think we haven't gotten an updated version for it yet.

I like it just as it is now, especially for the 80's mystery card game. With more detail the cards won't remain a mystery for very long.
