Open call for bullpen logic testers

Postby Sykes25 » Fri May 19, 2006 11:42 am

Sign me up please. I generally do not have issues with the bullpen logic; however, I am a seasoned vet of both the board game and TSN version.

guys, I think you missed SemperG's point. The request was by Bernie was over a month ago. I think Semper was asking what the results of the little experiment was. (ps.. I did the same thing until I looked at the dates :) )

Given the nature of some of the recent complaints about HALs bullpen logic, maybe it's time to do another beta test.

Yes, what did the testers learn?

Does TSN's conservative setting on relief usage still mean "normal"?

Just wondering -

what did tester's learn

Well, we got 24 games into the test round before Bernie had to put the project on hold. I am the least experienced manager in the group that included Bernie.

It was instructive in that Bernie was able to track how HAL made decisions in a methodical way. He tried some fixes on the early pulling of starters. Bernie can speak for himself but I think he/we learned that there were some problems with set-up man decision-making. We analyzed in excruciating detail box-scores and bullpen choices. I also think it was fair to say that most of the HAL decisions were pretty good. As many of you know I am a critic of HAL and so this opportunity was a good opportunity to do the examination scientifically.

Bernie tried to isolate questionable calls to see why HAL chose one pitcher over another, when was a subsitution made, what settings was the owner using at the tme, etc. For me, the real value will be in seeing if we can come to conclusions on what the manager strategy choices do and what they do not do. What is the first cut, the manager choice, the player settings or HALs logic. I especially wanted to see how HAL managed switch-hitters in critical situations. I suggested when we are finished we put out a guide to bullpen settinsg or something like that. That is all a long way off.

I also had a no-hitter in a damn test game. Can I save that for league play?

I think however it is fair to say we have not nearly finished the testing. I ams ure Bernie will call us back when his schedule clears (if it does).

Paul,

For the information.

I'm wondering why the test went cold as the pitching logical engine has been the bane of many of posting / forum.

Otherwise, I recall learning that TSN's conservative pitching relief setting equated to SoM's CD-ROM's normal setting. At first blush, I figured TSN would just implement the CD-ROM settings and be done with it.

Obviously, this topic won't go away by itself and I had high hopes that the testers would be armed with great news from the testing environment.

Oh well ... but great insight even though the process isn't nearly complete.
