Favorite 2005 Players

Postby mfsleeze » Thu Oct 27, 2005 4:36 pm

Haven't seen one of these threads in a while, so figured I'd try to start one. Who are the guys you tend to use a lot in 2005, who you would consider "your" guys? Everyone has them, here are mine (you can tell I mostly play in pitchers' parks):

SP
[b:5f8ce9c45c]Schmidt/Sheets[/b:5f8ce9c45c] - we all know the top starters are so valuable in 2005, I almost always get these guys when I want them and have never been disappointed

Cheaper:
[b:5f8ce9c45c]John Thomson, Jeff Weaver, Nate Robertson [/b:5f8ce9c45c]- I usually match up Weaver/Robertson and they've gone a combined 72-48 for me for under $4MM

RP:
[b:5f8ce9c45c]Juan Rincon[/b:5f8ce9c45c] - Lots of guys to choose from, but I usually just pair him up with another top RP and I'm done

Cheaper:
Lots of good guys, I like [b:5f8ce9c45c]John Parrish[/b:5f8ce9c45c] lately, but Esteban Yan, Jamie Walker, Justin Duscherer, Brian Shouse, Julian Tavarez have all been good in the right situation

C:

[b:5f8ce9c45c]Jason Kendall[/b:5f8ce9c45c] - I could not possibly be more on his bandwagon - used him about a half dozen times, .300, .400 OBP pretty much every time. Plus defense and 600 plate appearances. My favorite '05 guy.

1B:

[b:5f8ce9c45c]Adam Dunn[/b:5f8ce9c45c] - Gives you $8MM worth of power

2B:

[b:5f8ce9c45c]Jamey Carroll[/b:5f8ce9c45c] - I know he's a 3, but I'll take the tradeoff for the low e's and great OBP

3B:

[b:5f8ce9c45c]Robb Quinlan[/b:5f8ce9c45c] - I live with the injuries, just don't love any 3B this year so I usually end up with him

SS:

[b:5f8ce9c45c]Omar Vizquel[/b:5f8ce9c45c] - Decent O, solid D - anyone over $5MM at SS is overpriced this year imo.

LF:

[b:5f8ce9c45c]Lance Berkman[/b:5f8ce9c45c] - Just an absolute stud. I think the lowest OBA he's had for me was about .430

CF:

[b:5f8ce9c45c]Johnny Damon[/b:5f8ce9c45c] - Like 3B, I don't love any CF (except Edmonds) and so I'll take a guy who's going to hit .300. If not, I'll go cheap platoon here with Dejesus/somebody

RF:

[b:5f8ce9c45c]Gary Sheffield[/b:5f8ce9c45c] - I know, a butcher with the glove but he hits and with all the lefties I usually have, good guy to balance the lineup.

Other guys:

[b:5f8ce9c45c]Frank Thomas[/b:5f8ce9c45c] - cheap enough that he's worth the injury risk
[b:5f8ce9c45c]Lou Merloni/Eric Young[/b:5f8ce9c45c] - they do what you pay them to - hit LHP
[b:5f8ce9c45c]Ruben Sierra[/b:5f8ce9c45c] - my favorite hitters' park DH

So who have you guys had luck/success with?

Hmm, I'll give this a shot.

SP-$$$-Randy Johnson. What more can you ask for than to have in start any playoff game in any park.
SP-$$-Ted Lilly. Normally better than average numbers for mid range pitcher.
SP-$-John Thompson. Only had him a couple of times, but good for 15 plus wins when I did.
RP-$$$-Bradge Lidge. That 2R makes him a better bet than Wagner who has also been solid.
RP-$$-Guilermo Mota. Nothing spectacular but not bad for the price. Has been my main set-up guy on a few teams with good results.
RP-$-Tossup between J.J. Putz and Rudy Seanez.

Hitters-$$$-Adam Dunn, Brad Wilkerson and J.D. Drew have been great for me.
Hitters-$$-Lew Ford, Jason Kendall and Matt Lawton. Lawton has always put up spectacular #'s for me.
Hitters-$-Chris Gomez and Alfredo Amezaga. Gomez can flat out hit, and Amezaga is versatile on defense.

$ SPer- Unit (duh)
cheapy- Kenny Rogers (great in pitcher parks, plus, all them damn Sheas)

$RPer - Lidge
cheapy - Yan, Mesa (specialist platoon)

C - There are a couple of catchers I like, namely Mauer and Closser

1b - Overbay or Morneau

2b - Brian Roberts (Super low e #, plus ALL those doubles!!)

3b - Beltre (givin some luck with rolls, is a monster in any park, for example:: Beltre, Adrian R 3B 2e11 289 47 13 21 59 18 0 6 .318 .581 .359 (Thats in Petco, with another Petco in division!!!) BTW, thats in 72 games

SS - I don't like any really, so, go defensive I guess, if Rollins would not be 5.55 million, maybe, 4.25 or so, he would be great, but is a tad overpriced

OFers - Ichiro, Pierre, Winn, Guillen, Edmunds (of course), am sure there are others, but, kinda drawing a blank right now

SP - I tend to stick with Johan Santana or Jason Schmidt to head my staff. Haven't tried Randy Johnson yet, but I would like to try him. On the cheaper side, Glendon Rusch, Mark Mulder, Javier Vazquez, and Kelvim Escobar have done well for me.

RP - Billy Wagner is worth every penny if you use him often. Brad Lidge is a stud, too. Cheaper guys I like are Ricardo Rincon, Mota, Neal Cotts, and Danny Graves.

C - I usually stick with Mike Matheny or Brad Ausmus so I can spend more money elsewhere, but when I have had to go with a more expensive guy, Jason Varitek has done me right. I've also found that a Yorvit Torrealba/Javier Valentin platoon can be effective in the right park.

1B - J.T. Snow and Lyle Overbay have been my favorites so far, but Derek Lee puts up decent numbers as well. David Ortiz is a monster, but I usually stick him at DH.

2B - Luis Castillo if I can get my hands on him.

SS - Jimmy Rollins. I don't care what you guys say, he's produced at a high level for me every time I've had him. I will continue to take him at every opportunity.

3B - Adrian Beltre and Eric Chavez have put up solid numbers for me. A step lower in salary would be Jose Hernandez. Won a championship with Joe Randa.

OF - Jim Edmonds is a stud. J.D. Drew has been solid for me 3 out of 4 times. Juan Pierre treated me to 100 stolen bases in a season. Dustan Mohr is great in the right situation. A lot of people think Carlos Beltran costs too much, but I have never had a bad season from him. Chone Figgins and Kerry Robinson are cheap alternatives who can post very good numbers.

PEOPLE I HAVEN'T HAD BUT WILL TRY TO USE BEFORE THE YEAR IS OVER:
Randy Johnson, Ted Lilly, Eric Gagne, Albert Pujols (used him once, in Shea, want another go with him), Joe Mauer, Larry Walker, Juan Rincon, Pedro Martinez, Adam Dunn. I'm sure there are more, but I'm just listing everyone I can think of right now.

P - Schilling/Schmidt seem to be the best. Good mid range has been Carpenter. Best Cheapie has been John Halama. I have him on 3 teams right now and he 18-3
RP - Billy Wagner is best for me. Cheaper guys I like are Torres, Seanez,

C - Kendall

1B - Erstad very consistant. Pujols has been monster every time. Huff unless I DH or 3B

2B - Harris/Cabrera combo my favorite. Polanco close second as newer person being used.

SS - Renteria only guy seems to do half way decent

3B - Huff seems to end up here. I like Hernandez.

OF - Pierre always does better then averge for me. Mabry, Caberra(once) Robinson is very good cheapie. Bay (once) Vlad. JD Drew

DH - Ortiz/Huff

Burke!

Postby sousa » Tue Nov 01, 2005 8:45 pm

Looking at values for the money....

I like Burke at C for the money. He's slow and has no power but he's had 200 hits for me in several leagues and often enough I look to the top 10 in BA and it's full of $7-11M guys and him.

I tried Dunn a few times and he was fine, but I think
[b:e642fc1703]Morneau[/b:e642fc1703] is a poor man's Dunn and in a good park seems to me to
be a good value at $4.62M. If I had Dunn and Morneau was in FA I think I would drop Dunn in an instant. Tell me if I'm wrong so I can avoid future mistakes.

Sean Burroughs has been a great value player for me and I think others have noticed that he pays off--it's harder to get him in a draft than it used to be.

I like Burroughs too. I wish I could get Randy Johnson or Pedro Martinez. I just started with Roger Clemens and he got 13 strikeouts last night. I've used Klesko on every team though with one team I had to drop him cuz he kept getting hurt. My favourite reliever is Tom Gordon without a doubt.
