Baseball Cards

Postby RICHARDMILTER » Mon May 25, 2009 3:09 pm

I view Strat players as some of the most knowledgeable baseball fans. Just out of curiosity I was wondering if; there are any baseball card collectors out there? I collected as a child fairly seriously, however I sold most of my cards to pay for college in the late 1980s. It appears I got out of the business at just the right time. However recently my interest in the hobby has been peaked again. I have started buying some 1970s cards on ebay. Partly as small investments, and partly for the fun and memories. Have any of you ever collected?

I collected pretty serious in the 80's and early 90's. But got fed up with the crazy insert fad. I remember as a kid you worked all year completing your set via trade. Like everything else greed ruined it. I'm 43 years old now and still buy a pack now and then and put them in a box. Every once and a while I'll pull it down and go through it. I recently looked through it and realized I had a nice Braun rookie card in there. I still get excited looking through a new pack but I usually let my son open it first.

Collected as a kid mid-70's on, and then in 1979-80-ish when I was 11 years old, my older brother (9 years older), gave me his entire collection for my birthday. This was probably right before the whole card collecting boom started, and boy does he regret it today. To give you an idea of what he gave me...Nolan Ryan rookie, Carl Yastrzemski rookie, numerous Mantle, Mays, Koufax, etc...pretty much the biggest starts of the 60's.

I continued to collect until kinda peetering out when I went to college...nowadays there are so many options and certifications, etc., too much of a hassle.

I collected pretty actively in the 70's and 80's. I started ourt buying packs in the 70's, and then got paid in cards (mostly 1967-75) for washing a neighbor's car every week. I started buying older cards (40's, 50's, 60's) in the 80's through early 90's). I haven't bought a new card since 1993, though.

I keep saying that someday I'll sell most of the collection, but I never get around to it. I've started turning some things over to my kids, but I wonder if they ever will get interested in, say, Brooks Robinson or Warren Spahn.

I also only collect Topps. As soon as all those other companies started making cards the hobby got watered down. I did once have a 1933 Goudy tobacco card of Babe Ruth. It was in decent condition. I sold it before college.

Is the," National " event in Cleveland July 31st like a convention, where you can buy and sell, or is it just a display, like a museum??? I live in Cleveland, and will probably attend if I can make it.

I (quite literally) rescued my Dad's card collection from the attic of my grandparent's house just before Grandma purged it clean. A diehard Cubbie fan (still to this day), my Dad's collection filled a couple of binders, but was overrun with worthless (in dollar terms) Cubs cards.

Mixed in, however, were some gems, including about two dozen 1936 R312 cards, including this one (mine's equal in quality, safely stored at the bank until my kids get older):

It's a massive sell fest. Lots of dealers and former players signing autographs. I have been twice. You need to spend more than a day there. To much to see.

I've been collecting since '68. I don't get into the newer stuff. I mostly collect early 50's Bowman and '55 and '56 Topps. My son is just getting to the age where he can understand the game and players. Lots to pass on to him.

I have pretty much every Topps card from 1972 through the early 80's. I started like most guys, buying the packs one or two at a time at the local store. By '74 I was buying the entire sets. Also like many guys, I discovered girls and the cards went on the back burner. Happily, I've kept them all.

On a related note I used to have all SOM cards from 1973 through 1989, but I threw them away at some point in the early 1990's. I've never checked to see if there is a market for them, but I wish I had them back even if they are worthless. There were some fun memories in those cards.
