1999 Auction league - Full!!!!

1999 Auction league. Here's how it works:

Auction League, 1999 set, DH. No trades, no FAs. Your 25 is your 25. $200 mill salary cap, $80 mill to spend. Unique ballparks.

We've done this with ATGIV and are doing a second one in ATGIV as well as one in 2008, the auction part takes about six months and as all previous participants (four of them here so far) will confirm, it's not a drag at all, but big fun.

We start with five hitters and three pitchers - the first eight sign-ups will make the first nominations. Bidding starts at a minimum of 10% of the player's value and can be increased in increments of $100K. Any time 24 hours passes without a bid on a player, that player is awarded to the last person that placed a bid and that person makes the next nomination. You have $80 million to spend on the auction though the actual total salary of all players on your team is $200 mill, which is effectively no cap. Ballparks must also be bid on and can be nominated at any time when a pitcher is due for a nomination.

If you're interested to see how it works, this is our present ATG auction thread:

And these are our 2008 threads:

And this is the previous one:

which you can see took five months to complete.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

This is the perfect league for folks who like a lot of action and strategy without having to spend to buy lots of teams. It only works if you check the boards at least once a day or more.
i confirm it is a lot of fun!

so this is really a 80M cap, right? What's the 200M for? sorry for my misunderstanding.

The total carded value is $200. But you get $80 to bid with.

Example:
Larry Walker is valued at 10.94 mil. I win him in auction at 10.5 mil.
Randy Johnson is valued at 9.85 mil. I win him in auction at 7.8 mil.
Cal Ripken is valued at 4.58 mil. I win him in auction at 3.9 mil.

I have now bid a total of 22.2 mil. (10.5 + 7.8 + 3.9). I have 57.8 mil remaining to bid on 22 more players.

The total salaries of the players I won is 25.37 mil (10.94 + 9.85 + 4.58). I have 174.63 mil allowable roster space.

Essentially what this is, is there is no true salary cap, only that you have $80 mil to spend. The theory behind it, and it works, is it puts all the strategy into your bidding without having to worry about any secondary limits. As the draft progresses you need only concern yourself with your $80 mil to spend, you don't need to think about coming in under a TSN salary cap.

Having done these auctions the $80 mil limit without regards to true value, creates some very interesting strategies deeper in the draft when some managers start to run out of money and also when certain positions begin to run out of top players.

got it. I would guess most teams end up spending about $100M of TSN salary. Does it sound like I'm getting it right? The really prudent ones may hit $120 or so.

sounds fun either way.

I've never played an auction like this, but it seems simple and fun. I'd like to play if the space is not reserved.
