First 2008 team. Looking for feedback

Postby Delbird » Mon May 18, 2009 8:13 am

My opinion on Upton may be clouded by my just completed experience -

In Tropicana .225/.329/.337 41SB 11HR 180K

The other leagues I've been in he seems to be around .250-.275, good on SB, high on strikeouts, OBP around .350.

I've used Giles once (in Petco) and he almost matched his real stats exactly - .301/.391/.448 46 doubles, 12 HR (pretty amazing how close to reality it was). He started slow and I came close to dropping/trading him but decided to hold on to him - I think he's a perfect fit for Petco with his high doubles and OBP. I batted him third and he led the team with 91 RBI.

Thanks for the feedback. Giles card looks good and I hope he will do well in Miller Park. At this point I can use him as a DH if I keep Upton. I still have Thome who was my original DH and can only pay DH. Have you used Thome in the 2008 set? I may end up trading him unless I can work him in the lineup along with Giles.
I was thinking about offering Thome and my curent LF Clete Thomas for Jason Werth. Is this worth it? That would give me a good LF platoon with Schumaker.

Some other options at CF that I can go if I drop Upton are:

David DeJesus
Fukudome
Jody Gerut

Other guys are bad Defensively or have high injury ratings

When you do want to dispose of guys that are in the $4M+ range, consider trading them rather than dropping, as they may have value to others, too.

A few more options to consider:

Yunel Escobar / Troy Tulowitzki at SS over Ryan Theriot (I know Theriot has good speed, BA and OBP, but these guys are better defensively, and hit just as well).

Jody Gerut over B.J. Upton (Upton will probably disappoint as others have said).

D.J. Carrasco over Geoff Geary (You need a solid guy against lefties).

Keep 11 pitchers, but make it 6 starters and 5 relievers. Go after J.A. Happ, Max Scherzer, and/or Jeff Bennett, all good value pitchers for your park.

I actually had Yunel Escobar as my back up SS but then dropped him to help me get Brian Giles after the advice from A's that he was a waste of $ and Theriot was a better value.

I going to check into the pitchers that you suggested. If I add Carrasco and drop Geary, would you suggest that I drop Romero since I will have my lefty reliver?

To me, Werth isn't 'worth' it as the half of the platoon against lefties, as he is too expensive.

Like the changes that you made. I did not like your original team at all but you have improved it tremendously. I agree with getting rid of Upton. He's junk. IMHO you can put Iichiro at CF and Giles at RF. I used Gerut at right and he was fine. Take Upton money and upgrade LF and DH. Need more average in the middle of your lineup. Thome isn't good enough as a DH. Also having a 3-16 at SS is problematic.

Thank you. I guess I can try and get Yunel back to get a 2 at SS and drop Thome and Upton to get better at LF and DH as you suggested. Giles can be my RF and should do well based on everyone's feedback on him. I stil need to swap out Geary for Carrasco and will probably drop Romero.

What about Gabe Kapler to play my LF platoon?

That would give me Giles, Ichiro, and Kapler vs Leftie and for righties, sub Schumaker for Kapler.

I don't know your money situation, so he might be too much to platoon against lefties, but Reed Johnson does a nice job.

A VERY inexpensive option (although injury prone) is Ryan Freel.

Just a couple thoughts, good luck with the season!

Thank you for the feedback.. Reed Johnson is already on a team. If I dump Upton, Thome, and Clete Thomas I can swing Kapler. Another option I thought of is Steve Pearce. It is a low cost LF and good against LHP (7L).

Kapler's great against lefties, but not a good value against righties, and you won't face that many in your division. If you're looking to spend that kind of money, at least get Dejesus, though he isn't great for you either. I'd look around to find a good trading partner. If not Matt Joyce wouldn't be that bad.

As for Carrasco, he's right-handed, so I still think you need a lefty reliever.

Looking at it again, perhaps Yunel Escobar isn't such a good value (just as the As said earlier  ). However, he is wrong about Inglett, and I don't think he's worth having on the team, and definitely not worth starting. Glaus will be good for you against righties.
