24 Team League,....my 3 cents

Postby Sknsfan » Mon Aug 17, 2009 11:00 pm

I'm in Keyzick's league and I was saddled with the 23rd waiver position, but I got all three of my Waiver requests.

In the draft I went for a few long shots and platoons instead of gunning for too many key players I couldn't live without.

If I fail at this this one it's all on me.

As for the draft - The biggest thing to watch out for is Pitching - Almost nothing left there. Should have placed some of my picks higher. And be prepared to run with a 5 man rotation, or if you're really lucky maybe a solid 3 *sp with two cheapies to fill in your missing 40 starts.

I'm interested to see how much better hitting is overall here in a 24 person league, with that many more starters being seen, only one team has a really dominating pitching rotation.

I'm in a 100M-24 in ATG. I got hosed on my SP but came out of it ok really. I think my team will be middle of the road. I have good SP, a killer pen , decent D ,some speed, and some power in a singles pitchers park. I think with the 24 teams its thinned the herd so to speak . So it may be a better team than I think or ...well... worse also. If they somewhat are competitive and hanging around I'll be happy.

Wow, now that is some good strategic picking! I think I ended up getting only one or two waiver picks, and they were my back-up picks to boot.

BTW...I'm off to a 1-2 start...also interesting to note that we don't start league play within our own divisions. Thought that might be of some interest.

I have not tried a 24 team league yet, but I am always surprised how many of the waivers I DO get. Of course that is only in 12 team leagues. But with people missing on different positions, and having different ideas, game plans, and stadiums;. I always seem to be able to ,"Fix" my team in waivers and free agency. However, I am sure 24 teams will put this success to the test.

I looked at the link for one of the 24 team leagues with a 80 million dollar cap, and I found two things quite interesting. One, EVERYONE had maxed out rosters(28 players). This is unique to 80 million dollar caps. And I know I would love having a bigger roster to work with.

But I also noticed even with the 28 man rosters everyone is using, some guys still were not able to use all 80 million. I will be interested in seeing if there is LESS balance and parity in 24 team leagues because of this. I have seen teams with lower total salaries do well in draft, or theme leagues. We shall find out if a 76 million dollar team and keep up with a GM who may have been luckier(or smarter) in the draft and was able to use all 80 million. I still believe 60 million, or even 70 million would be optimum for 24 team leagues.

I almost forgot(with my rambling on) about Keyzick's information about his schedule NOT starting with divisional play. That too is most interesting. What do you guys think about that? And are there too many division games? Or is it perfect because the emphasis should be on winning divisions and divisional play?

I personally feel that without real MLB rivalries so much emphasis on divisional play is somewhat unnecessary and counter productive for making sure the best teams get a crack at the playoffs. But that is a more of a personal opinion about a minor issue.

So our first 24 Team, $60M league is ending this week. Here are my overall impressions:

[b:2815a61c82]Draft -[/b:2815a61c82]
You have to be very strategic, since missing on too many players can really screw you over fighting for the scraps remaining from the player pool. This was fun (probably cuz I got most of my picks), but I could easily see someone get extremely frustrated if they miss on their more important picks...remember, smaller cap, plus twice as many teams!

[b:2815a61c82]Waivers[/b:2815a61c82]
This can be tough if you're in the bottom half of the priority list, but then again, you're there cause you did better than others on getting the picks you wanted. VERY tough to know who you'll end up with here. I was 23rd on the waivers, but I needed a CF (had 0 on my team after the draft!), so had to use 5 of my 8 picks on backup plans if I didn't get my #1 choice for a CF...had to settle for Bernadina!! Make sure you're at your PC at 5pm EST when waivers run...the frenzy at that point is crucial!!

[b:2815a61c82]Season[/b:2815a61c82]
Unbalanced schedule, different format than 12 team schedules, made things very interesting IMO. Some (myself being one), started out with 39 of first 51 games on the road. Obviously balances out in the end, but was kinda cool to start that way.

[b:2815a61c82]Postseason[/b:2815a61c82]
4 Divisions, 6 teams each, but only the 4 division winners make the playoffs...that makes for some very anti-climactic endings for a majority of the league. My suggestion to TSN would be to split the 4 divisions into an AL and NL, and similar to MLB have a wild card from each.

Overall, thought it was a great change of pace from the 12 teamers. $65M - $70M would probably be more ideal salary-wise, but not a deal-breaker.
