Question for the veterans

[quote:b38bbf4dd1="scorehouse"]another huge mistake. if you spend money on pitching, you must and i mean must back him up with great fielding. ss,2b,cf must be 1's. i think catcher also. ofs need good arms and i would not have more than 2's at the other positions. if you get a great hitter who's a 3/4 put him in lf.[/quote:b38bbf4dd1]

It's not a MUST to have all 1's at those positions. I'd be perfectly fine with 2's at all of them, as a matter of fact.

when considering a pitchers card you can find value by accepting more than average amount of walks...walks on a pitchers card are much better than hits..particulary if the hits are for XB's for single**...this is even more palitable, if as stated above, you have good middle D, pitchers that have good GBA's #'s and pitchers/C's with good combined hold ratings. Remember...walks don't typically drive in runs or advance baserunners more than a base at a time thus keeping the DP in tact.

scorehouse says if you have great pitching you have to have great middle defense to support them.

splinter says if you have pitchers that give up a lot of walks you have to have good middle defense to get DPs.

I don't understand when it's "OK" to have less than great middle defense.

Thoughts?

Having good middle defense isn't really part of the intricacies of card-reading, but is very important nonetheless. A middle fielder has to have enough offense to overcome any defensive liability. I have no idea on any of the 200X players (the last "current" season I ever bought was 1991), but the only time I've seen that much offense is with Hubie Brooks in 1986, and Hack Wilson in ATG, and you better have STELLAR pitching to go with them. If the pitcher has any offense on his card, good defense is essential.....Mike

little clarity. if your high-priced pitchers have lots of X's as opposed to strikeouts you need great fielding. example. i'm in a league where pedro is 3-5 with a 5.37 era thru 42 games. he had a 4 at 2b and a 3 at ss. thru only 42 games the team has made 50 errors. manager has since adjusted. remember on the fielding chart, the X's are hits for 2/3/4's before errors even enters the equation.

"intricacies of card reading". it's very important to understand the impact of X's on pitcher's card in conjunction with your defense as the defensive ratings determine the outcome of an X roll?

Every pitcher has exactly the same number of X rolls for each position.
