PBTR being Bickel is interesting. I just ran into PBTR for the first time and he made the exact same impression on me that Bickel made the first time I was in a league with him. I thought they were both totally arrogant and obnoxious. PBTR also has a similar record to Bickel with more volume, but Bickel had a lot of outside activities and used to take some sabaticals. I grew to like Bickel. I haven't yet seen the charming side of PBTR.

My Death Greatly Overblown!

Postby Semper Gumby » Wed Feb 08, 2006 10:50 pm

Splinter,

I am back from Fallujah (Iraq) after a 10 month tour with the U.S. Marines.

Did this second trip as the lead economist and had some fun trying to spend that alleged [b:0007142dcc]$20 billion[/b:0007142dcc] of reconstruction funds.

And to think, I nearly did it

Psss ... Marines should never ever be allowed to arrange a free lunch nonetheless a damn reconstruction construct for Iraq / Department of State :D

No Strat-o-Matic in Iraq but I did have my baseball glove and SoM Version 9.0 disc with me. So far, I have entered a 80s public league with Penngray and few other folks.

Perhaps I will see you in the games again!

Back to the original topic (but certainly glad to see you back home Semper):

Nicole was definitely a fake. None of the people who claimed to 'know' her ever produced any kind of link to an obituary, article or anything else that would have confirmed her. All we ever had was a few people saying, "I can't tell you, but I know for sure she's real" that kind of stuff. It's also interesting to note that the few people who "knew" her and could prove she was real pretty much disappeared from the boards right around the time 'Nicole' did.

Right after the time she supposedly 'died', somebody on these boards turned up an article about a similar hoax on another Internet chatroom, where the person who was dying was also named Nicole. Turned out that Nicole was a high school student who was alive and kicking and got caught pulling a prank. I'm sure what we had was a copycat version of that.

There were several threads on the old message boards about her where people turned up some amazing anecdotal evidence to prove she was not real. I can't remember what they all were, but I do remember that it was a lot of stuff that just didn't make sense.

We were duped. Some people even donated credits to her, as I recall. Although it may have only been the people who were 'in on it.'
