Electric Football

Another thing I'm remembering is that we used to mess with the little flaps on the underside of the 'players', fooling ourselves that this somehow influenced the direction in which they would move.

In later years they had the adjustable wheel on the base of the players so that you could adjust each player individually to either go straight (yeah right), turn left or turn right.

Remember the sheet of uniform numbers that you could peel off and put on your players backs to look more like your NFL heros?

one of the local news stations ran a special on this very topic in the hours before the Superbowl. The reporter discovered this is still a very popular hobby and that the tournament this year hosted over 1000 people. The guy who runs these tournaments lives right here in the Detroit area but i think they said it was held in Vegas this year. i could be wrong about the location. All of his players looked hand painted, very cool. They even have leagues set up with very specific rules. i'm sure theres a web site out there about this. These guys had a lot of it down to a science. Almost...there still were those guys that went 5 yards and then turned around and ran the wrong way as well as the guys who always seem to lock hands and go in a circle.

There is a really interesting article here at ESPN.com's page 2. Makes me wish I knew exactly how it all worked, but unfortunately, I've only seen it on TV or in the movies and have never actually played.

Hey...let's play it on the Internet!! We could do adjustments on the players before 9:00 EST and then HAL could play the games overnight.

Better yet kicking the impossible 80 yd field goal with time running out only to lose the last felt (or later foam rubber) football in the strip. Worse yet you never knew if it went through the uprights......the argument continues every Christmas.

Anybody ever play Foto-Electric Football? I think my dad's version (the picture on the box is of a guy wearing a leather helmet, so it's old) is still sitting in their basement (along with one of those stick hockey games with the original 6 teams). I remember many arguments on whether the path of the ballrunner intersected a defender or not...
