[quote:864c6351e2="Risden"]Obviously, there's no such thing as a "hot pitcher"; each series, each game and each roll of the simulated dice are independent of each other, but it sure is nice to have a stud pitcher to throw at least 2 games in any series (just like in real life).[/quote:864c6351e2]

[b:864c6351e2]Ris[/b:864c6351e2]:

Just because you can't pre-select hot pitchers doesn't mean you can't [i:864c6351e2]have[/i:864c6351e2] hot pitchers. Each spin of the roulette wheel is independent too, but it doesn't mean you won't see ten straight reds.

On my first ring team I had Garcia and Happ throw 40 playoff innings and go 5-0 (two shutouts) with a combined ERA of 1.48 and a WHIP of 1.10. I'd say that's pretty hot.

I couldn't have forecasted that ahead of time, but there [i:864c6351e2]are[/i:864c6351e2] lucky streaks to be had out there. And with the probabilities, the more you spend the more likely you are to see a short series "hot" streak. But sometimes you don't even have to pay up for it.

The chances that you get quality pitching increase as the pitcher salary increases. There are obvious exceptions that are either relative bargains or relative busts. In addition, there are always ballpark variations, L/R variations and other variations to consider as well.

Agreed - Lucky streaks, yes. "Hot pitchers", no.

Once in the Play-offs, it appears to be luck

Howdy,

I play in the 70s leagues, where good hitting is generally more difficult to find than in other decades. My only championship was with an 83 win Astrodome team over a hard-hitting Wrigley field squad. We had Metzger at SS and played good "d" up the middle. I say we were lucky.

The playoffs often come down to 'match ups.' If your team has a weakness in the bullpen or a weakness to LH starters, it doesnt take much to exploit it for a game or two. If you can swing just one game in a playoff series, that will usually be enough to decide the series. Can you exploit a weakness in the other team and limit their chance to expose your weakness?

In the old 5 game semis, having a beast ace pitcher seemed to make a big difference. A lot of times my non-star rotation would lose because I had a uber weak 5th starter going up against a *Randy Johnson for the 2nd time. Rarely would I win those match ups. Needlesstosay, I carry a beast ace most of the time now.

I seem to make the playoffs a lot, but not to the finals so often, let alone win the finals. Decided to try to stack the deck by using injury guys-- who tend to be discounted around 20% in price compared to a comparable non-injury card and simply praying that my guys didn't get injured. Figured if I could take the semis quickly, I'd only have to expose the injury guys to say 5 or 6 games. I don't know if it was just luck, but I won the finals with the 'injury' team. Tulo was my only significant injury in 12 games (injured in the last semis game, he missed the finals completely).

Having so many guys who can get injured certainly makes managing a lot more challenging.

Do you really want?

Postby elpasopesos » Sat Jun 25, 2011 6:09 pm

Do you really want the "secret formula" (yours for a price)? Isn't it much more fun to research the players with their positives and negatives, develop a strategy within the park you want to unfold that strategy, play the game you want to play it: play for pitching, the long ball, speed, defense etc.? Of course it is. If I could tell you the secret way to win everytime, wouldn't it all become boring and trivial? I get a thrill seeing my strategy play out during the season; I try to never drop players only trade, I play only one team at a time, I prepare for injuries but pray they don't occur, and hope the closer has a great year. I worship HAL in his great computational holiness and hope for the best. But most of all I just have fun. PSSSS I also have the secret formula for happiness in life.
