Bernie should just get rid of the trade option...

[quote:b37a72e934="Pelzer"]Something I will often try is sending the manager of the team I am wanting to trade with a message saying I am interested in so and so....Is there anyone on my roster that interests you?

That is a starting point...avoiding what he may consider a bad offer and I will usually make a trade, more often than not.

I have had a few managers that will not even answer, but for the most part a pretty good trade dialog will begin and you have a better idea of what he is needing and can shape a deal that will fit you both.

Trading is a great feature in the game and doing away with it would not be good....Don't get po'd because someone won't trade....Change your tactics [/quote:b37a72e934]

Nicely said Pelzer...those are the best starting points to initiate a trade. I try to counter offers if I don't like an inititial trade offer, but it does often turning into a task trying to make sure salaries balance out AND good fits for both teams.

The problem is, in order to get a trade to work within the salary cap, you sometimes have to add in players that end up making the deal look stupid. I've been playing Strat online since it launched here and I'm certain I'm averaging less than one trade per season per team.

Most of the trades I do (probably around 80%) occur in the days after the draft and before waiver claims. I'd say about 15% occur after waivers but before the season starts, and the remaining 5% occur during the season. Don't know how much this aligns with the way others trade. I also don't ever send a blind trade offer, I usually shoot out a league-wide e-mail saying who on my team is available for trade and then interested people either send an offer or reply and things go from there.

I agree about sending out a league-wide message regarding who's available, I usually get at least one decent offer when I do that (except when I offered Jason Hammel in a 24 tm league, nobody wants poor Jason for some reason, oh right, he's terrible).

the way to make trades happen is to be an active communicator.
those owners who think that four trades a season is not possible are just not paying attention to how to make things possible.
Offering unbalanced value trades is a sure way to stop communication.
Offering trades that help both teams, even if one of the owners doesn't accept the trade (usually because of a "favorite player" situation)---is a great way to start a conversation, that can, and often does, lead to a different trade.
Offering 3 mediocre players for 1 stud, is a certain way to stop communication.
finding out first what other owners are looking for, is a great way to begin the process. if you try to give other owners, just players that you don't want, making trades is going to be very challenging.

[quote:7b31cf6798="chasenally"]From the Commish (This is a theme league)

This has been a great league so far. Lots of chat and trades. I've been
keeping up with all of the trades (check out our Indiv League Chat). So far
there have been 27 trades - about 27 more than most Strat leagues these
days. We are now in the second half of the season, but before we get too
settled in, we will have a bunch of transactions after Game 120.

I offered a trade to another team that I thought helped me more than him. I told him to look over my lineup and tell me what he wanted out of my bench players and gave that player to him for next to nothing thanking him in both trades. We have many players on our rosters that we would never use so that does make it easy.[/quote:7b31cf6798]

I am the commissioner of this league. The theme and a good bunch of guys has led to a lot of trades.

[quote:833a86b663]First, I make a decent amount of trades, but:

Yes Way! I average over 4 trades per league in ATG with at least 3 in most leagues and up to 6 in many.

Fair 2 for 1 and 3 for 1 are often 2 or 3 useless players for 1 good or great player. If you are offering 2 or 3 bench quality players for 1 quality starting player you are going to get turned down even if the money is equal.

Here is a perfect example of what I am talking about:

I offer someone the following trade (we are both playing in hitter's parks).

I give up:

Bruce
Greinke

Other team gives up:
C. Hart
R. Clayton

I would get the slightly better hitter and the other team gets the SP upgrade. That trade gets declined and the other owner proposes the following:

I give up:
Bruce
Verlander

Other team gives up:
Hart
Clayton

Are you ******* kidding me with that offer???? Unbelievably one-sided in the other team's favor. No trade can get made when people always want to pull the proverbial pants down of the other owner. And it's like this 99.99999% of the time.

It's time to do away with the trade function...
