what's with the draft process???

Postby str8change » Sat Apr 01, 2006 8:34 am

well after many waiver moves and several more FA moves, my roster now looks like this: (*** and I play in Jack Murphy Stadium)

Pitchers (in salary order)
SP Dave stewart
SP Frank Viola
SP Tom Browning
SP Scott McGregor
SP Pete Vuckovich
RP Dave Righetti
RP Jeff Reardon
RP Kent Tekulve
RP Bob Stanley (not too enthused, but his numbers are surprisingly good for his salary)
RP Jay Howell

Hitters
Dave Winfield
Tim Raines
Kent Hrbek
George Bell (tradeoff with K. Mitchell, similar numbers but about $2mill price difference)
Lance Parrish
Terry Pendleton
Bo Jackson
Rich Gedman
Harold Reynolds (tradeoff with T. Hulett, who I don't even know, and price about the same)
Wally Backman
Ron Kittles
Shawon Dunston (the only good fielding SS left is Rick Burleson)
Carmelo Martinez
Tony Scott

I'm still looking to get a cheaper backup Catcher, a better defensive SS, and get rid of Kittles and Scott, and might pursue a trade for Hrbek, as he seems to be a little overpriced for my blood... and still pretty "iffy" on Stanley, but that's probably more to do with watching him meltdown in the '86 series, than anything else!

Know the feeling

My 1st draft in BTT80s was terrible. Luckily made it too the message boards and with input from the veterans 80s managers picked up a few pointers.Just my 2 cents but I've had a few playoff teams with Burleson, Schofield or Griffin at shortstop most of the time. I haven't had a team in the Murph though. I would think about Burleson

This post should be in the 80's for the best help for your team. The 80's guys are very helpful, especially to new players. Below are a few opinions which I think could help your team.

Drop Dunston for Burleson now. A 1 at SS is great, especially matched up with a 1 at 2B in Reynolds, and Burleson will hit as well as Dunston. Dunston was a better baseball player than he is an 80's SOM player IMO.

Drop Vuckovich or McGregor now. You only need 4 *SP for a rotation. The 5th guy will never pitch. Since you have several LHP I would drop McGregor and pick up any 75¢ SP to put in your "rotation". Like I said he will never pitch so it doesn't matter who you pick. With the extra money you can drop Vuckovich too for a better *SP or upgrade elsewhere.

Hrbek should be good at the Murph or any power park. If you drop him be sure to pick up a good power hitter for 1B. Either of the Clarks, Murray, Guerrero, McGwire, Mike Schmidt or Mattingly are about the only ones I like better than Hrbek for your stadium. Guerrero and Jack Clark both come with fielding issues though.

Bo is either hit or miss......litteraly. I have not used him before but he seems like either HR or K.

You should downgrade Backman if you are going with Reynolds at 2B. You don't need a backup that costs that much. Wilfong, Oester, Flannery, Fletcher, etc will do just fine.

BTW, it is Ron Kittle, not Kittles. Kittles sounds like dog food! :P

I hope some of this helps.

My 2 current teams going as we speak. The 1st at Tiger has been on fire of late. Built it looking long ball and natural OBP. Second team was strickly OBP and average, with hopes of power from Kong and Schmidt. Schmidt started horribly, but I stuck with him.
My early mistakes in the 80's was dropping to quickly, taking advantage of the cheap waiver hit. Now I weight till about game 25 and evaluate the players then. It has payed off as I will have 3 straight play-off teams.
If an injury reveals a bad year early, then I will bend this rule I have set for myself.
Finally think "Earl". Pitching, defense and the 3 run homer!

I love hearing that they only use 4 SP's, as I will drop those two and go out and get Nolan Ryan (I have $5 mill in cap space already), and Backman is as good as gone too, I remember him as a decent player, but one that couldn't hit anything but RHP... Burleson looks good, he's still there... the best validation is the guys I dropped like ahot potato are all still FA's and we've had probably 400-500 FA transactions since the draft, but nobody is interested at all in the high priced guys I've dropped.

Nolan Ryan won't help you unless you stay with a 5 man rotation since he is not a *SP. Look for the guys with an * if you plan on using a 4 man rotation.

you lost me.... what does the asterisk mean? I'm not sure any of my other starters have or don't have asterisks as I wasn't paying the slightest bit of attention to that. Frankly I'm not even sure how Nolan Ryan won't help you at all in a league from the '80's!

there's the dilemma... as I look over the FA's left at SP that have the *, they primarily are all LHP, and I'm not sure that the available RHP's are significantly better than Vuckovich. The best options appear to be Mark Langston, Tommy John, Jerry Reuss, but all are LHP... the best RHP options at least by salary, are Candiotti, Rueshel, and it gets worse fom there!

Look at the starters position. It will read S7, S6/R3 or something like that. The starters that only need 3 days of rest between starts, hence the 4 man rotation, will have an * in front of the position. For example *S7 or *S6/R3.

These are the starters that averaged 200 IP for their 5 seasons or close to it. If you want a 4 man rotation then all 4 of your starters need to have that * in front of their position. Otherwise you will need 5 SP for a rotation and you could use a combination of *SP and non *SP if you like.

Nolan Ryan is not a *SP which means you would have to have 5 SP for a rotation.
