Mark Sweeney and other 2006 disapointments

Postby glennglenn » Sun Apr 16, 2006 11:00 am

Sanlotshrink is wise to point out the exceptions- especially given the small sample sizes we are culling from so far-after all YMMV- but in the 6 league I've been in this is what I've seen- for example if Konerko bites it in the 6 leagues I'm in- he may do well in others- but chances are there will be plenty of leagues he wont- since faring poorly in all 6 leagues is statistically unlikely

thanks for the posts sandlot, I see along with the guys you listed, I noticed alot more of the early suspects woefully underperforming on some of those teams...especially freddy garcia and jon garland. riveras got his own thread here, and for most people he's shining, but ive seen little middle ground with him, including my own unfortunate experience. it worries me to see another underachieving tejada, especially in the obp department, since I just drafted him in the second round, and many places he goes higher. shocked to see furcal under .200 on that one team, ive got him performing exceptionally on one of my teams, although with the luxury of hitting in the bottom of the order.

I've been quite disappointed with Garland so far as well--and have Garcia outpitching him on a minute maid team. But Garcia is a steal for me in minute maid if he gives me a 4.25 era in MM--he only has a mediocre card anyway--but I find it hard to believe Garland's WHIP will pan out, but we'll see.

I'm pretty happy with Glaus so far--but have ARod in MM and he's batting 230 with a 315 OBA--while hitting very well on the road.

But really we're looking at such small sample sizes once you account for ballparks, L/R splits, etc. Would be premature to write off cards like Glaus's and Garland's right now.

And sure--paying a premium for ARod's glove (I agree with the atatement regarding overpaying for good leather in middle d posns this year), but having him at SS gives me the extra batter I need in the lineup in a hitter's park. That's more valuable than putting him at 3B.

FYI -- in "surfing" various leagues (as I am apt to do  ), I have see a LOT of excellent Glaus performances -- so many in fact that I am convinced his card is one of the better bargains in this year's set btw.

Based on my own experience and viewing other people's problem cards, I suggest:

Michael Young (as mentioned above)
Mark Ellis (for the most part, a disaster, though a few people have had success with him)
John Smoltz

Yeah Sandy--it's hard to write off 8 BPHRs both sides with near 40 OBs both sides...I wouldn't touch him in a PETCO because he doesn't have enough hits and his XBH power is all from the #'s, but otherwise he seems like a good deal--probably .5 mil lower price than you'd expect.

As for Mark Sweeney,
+ low dp's and posi clutch
+ 25 nat hits vs RHP
+ 46 OBs vs RHP
- low TBs both sides
- low XBH without the #'s

So, really his defense leaves him as only a maybe at 1B...he's not a dominant enough hitter to be a DH with all the other great low D high hit guys, and he's going to probably slug at about a .400 clip unless he's in a hitter's park.

Basically, I'd only use him in a HR hitter's park with someone like Sheffield maybe DHing to even him out, so you could play him every day. I just think 4 mill for a RHP specialist who doesn't play D and can go down for 15, given his weaknesses, he will be on the FA market in many leagues. Same as many of the first basemen.

IVE had smoltz suck early too. I know it's a small sample, but when youre highest priced and most prized pitcher is getting consistently rocked, it digs a hole that's hard to get out of. i'd try smoltz again, but no use for garland, whom no one could believe won 20-games last year considering his previous career numbers, and is pitching his way out of the rotation in '06. btw, smoltz hasn't looked to hot in real life april so far either.
