The Festivus Airing of the Grievances...

Yeah, he was one of those mystery cards that I drafted thinking "oh, man, that would be sweet if I could get his biggest season". Then again, I guess we all say that about every card we draft...glad I can state the obvious.

Finally, I can tell my story. Though it hurts still, there is enough distance to tell my tale.

Well to start, I have to mention that my draft went pretty damn well. A lot of these guys I always want and never get, especially two of my favorite players, Eric Davis and Dwight Evans. So I was pretty thrilled with my draft, and as you can see the batting results were impressive - three guys with 40+ HRs, and another two with 30+. Davis stole his 40th base in the last regular-season game, making him the real first 40-40 man (eat than, Canstinko). I think ED was first in MVP voting, followed by Evans and Reggie was fourth. I got the best seasons for many players (even though some didn't play up to it) and had the best record in the league by one win (I rested several starters in the last series).

So what happens? Not only do I lose the playoffs, I'm swept out. Ouch. I can really only complain about a couple things here, which is that Higuera, my best pitcher in the season, was yanked from game one after allowing just his third hit of the game to lead off the 8th. We had the lead and my pen obviously blew it. The other is the central teams wound up tied for the lead so i wound up facing the team that was ranked "1st" instead of second, which was odd. The team in the other division had about 10 fewer wins and would have been easie probably.

Now, most of my pitchers got poor years, so it does tell me I need to be more aggressive about dropping pitchers. Only other thing I can say there is that I got Thigpen's 57-save season and he pitched HORRIBLY, an ERA over 4 . . . terrible.

But this is the kicker, why this loss hurt so much - I played softball with my brother this year . . . three leagues, and in every league we made it to the championship game, only to lose. Three chances and failings was bad enough, but the fourth made me not want to play for a while. Arggh!

This 01 team did better than I expected. I marched through the semis in 4. What happened next was not good, swept out of the finals by a combined score of 71-12 lost by scores of 12-3, 22-4, 32-4 and 5-1

Since airing my complaint about my terrible finals run, I had three team started at the same time make the playoffs get off to a 5-0 start, only to all be swept out in the last nine games. I now have a nine game playoff losing streak. Beware, no one, including HAL, likes a whiner.

Take heart Jerry, everyone knows the true mark of a great Strat GM/Coach is playoff appearances, NOT CHAMPIONSHIPS! Anything can happen in a short series or even a 7 game series, but to make the playoffs as consistently as you do, you have to be a great manager! And that applies to all you guys!
