Ok, I have spent the better part of 20 minutes getting updated on this thread, and my highest priority became quickly apparent - find the root of the Jessica Alba references! Bernie is a pretty sharp guy, he knows how easily all of us Strat geeks can be led astray by references to a hot babe we will never get a whiff of. :D
One thing very important to understand in the bigger picture: TSN is bleeding money and Paul Allen is trying to sell it, and will likely get around 30 cents on the dollar for his original investment. We need to think about the future of SOMO and guys like Penn are on target with criticisms - TSN has not done a great job of managing not only this little server upgrade but the SOMO product in general. The SOMO community, while small in terms of revenue, SHOULD BE extremely important to TSN because of our loyalty, and that loyalty exists because we are a captive audience. There is nothing more important to an online operation than number of unique dedicated users who spend large amounts of time on your site, but TSN has not yet figured out how to market to us, take advantage of us, cross-sell us, etc.
This server issue is symptomatic of the transition from brick & mortar (or pulp/glossy) to internet content delivery for a company like TSN, and there are just too many things that TSN is learning (or not learning) on the fly - they are playing catch-up, and not well.
None of this is intended as a criticism for Bernie, who is fighting fires and doing the best he can given the circumstances and who I feel is dedicated to us as a community and wants to see us supported and engaged. I appreciate his intention to make things right for us or compensate us in some way - that's an appropriate response.
That said, we need to realize that there is no easy way out given the big picture issues at play with TSN, and we'll need to be prepared for anything. It may sound farfetched, but given Hal R's eccentricities and lack people to leave SOM to as a business, investing as a community in buying the SOM license down the road may not be as crazy as it seems. Let's keep talking along those lines & see what materializes.
