A-Rod's new Jersey number for 2006...

Postby Jerlins » Wed Oct 12, 2005 11:47 pm

Devilrage has made the statement "overated" for one. A couple others have agreed, so yes, my comments are directly related to those comments.

Okay, you're right, devilrage did say overrated. I missed that comment.

To be honest, I'm not sure what that means. What is overrated? Doesn't that depend on everyone's own perspective and how they rate a certain player? Maybe in relation to his contract, then I think there is a legitimate argument that A Rod isn't worth $25M a year compared to the output you get from a combination of players that make up $25M a year. Or in other words, what would you rather have one player for $25M or be able to spread that money over and improve in a number of other areas. Although for the Yankees, it doesn't matter because $25M is just a drop in the bucket and they can afford whatever they want. For the Rangers, A Rod probably was "overrated" in the sense they are likely better off using that $25M a year and spreading that around to more than one player.

To be honest, I don't agree (as I indicated above) that A Rod or Bonds are overrated talentwise. Both A Rod and Bonds (when healthy) are tremendous and gifted players. Before 2002, Bonds struggled greatly in the playoffs. So far, so has A Rod. Maybe A Rod eventually will break out of his playoff slump much like Bonds did. Or maybe he won't. When both players struggled, it appears they put too much pressure on themselves that resulted in them struggling and not performing well in the playoffs.

You have to consider sample size as well. Arod has played 17 games with 64 AB's in the postseason. Not much to go on there That's not even equivelant to 3 weeks of a baseball season. He's hitting .297 with a .469 SLG%, and a .392 OB%. If he goes through that "slump" over a 2 1/2 week stretch next year nobody says a word. Timing is everything.

My statement,

1) I won’t comment about the greats of Ted Williams, or E. Banks. Or any other profession athletes. The reason, I didn’t see them play much during there careers with their respectful teams, and to mention them is totally irrelevant of the cause or points made, this is strictly about Alex Rodriguez, so please keep it towards Alex Rodriguez, any other players being mention or using as example its out of line. In addition, I will apologized for mentioning about Bonds, its not his thread, so I will be dismissing the comments I made about him on this thread, however if he is brought up on another thread, then I might speak out freely as I am going to speak or debated about Alex Rodriguez here.

2) The bottom line in any profession sports, is to win a championship, If you think its more important to lead the league in hitting or pitching statistics, then you really don’t know about sports in general. I know when I used to play hockey, I only cared about winning championships. And believe me, that’s the bottom line of being in sports is to win. Not statistics.

3) Alex Rodriguez, as far I am concern I stand very strong about calling him overrated player, If you don’t know what the word means, here is the meaning of “overrated”, have to high an opinion of, Now, am I being out of line here? Is it my fault media people, or fans love the guy performances during the regular season, or were he plays? His expose with a high demands of interest, and usually when that is the case in the real world, if you don’t do well, you are going to hear criticism or worse. I am just curious during his career has he ever won a championship? No! didn’t even come close. When Alex Rodriguez, was traded to New York, his comments where, “ I could now win a championship”, something in that context, however, thus far any team that Alex Rodriguez has played on in profession baseball, (MLB) hasn’t won a championship yet. And when the day comes that Alex Rodriguez, wins his first championship, I will stand very strong of calling him overrated.

Very convenient of you to eliminate from the discussion the greatest players never to win, which simply would squash your argument.

Korkie, the argument is about Arod, NOT about any other player, so you are WRONG.

Well this would certainly qualify to the other players as well. If you want to whine about Arod feel free to do so, but don't use this idiotic argument.
