First time owner....need some help

Postby Wade77 » Tue Jul 04, 2006 12:07 am

Thanks for reading. Here's a link to my team. Playing in Fenway, thought I'd try and field a good defense and have a deep pen. Subsequent reading leads me to believe I overdid relief, and ignored OBP too much. Tried scrounging for OBP on waivers, but I could use an experienced eye to help me proceed. Thanks.

I'll bump again the "how to make a team link" thread in a sec, look for it in this forum, it should be close to this thread.

You have two threads going?

You will know that the link is right when it ends in numbers and not letters. Try again.

Yeah I figured that people wouldn't want to check back this one, and i didn't realize replies brought the thread to the top. Total novice here. Thanks for your patience, I'm learning....

I would say that you didn't just over do it in the bullpen, but on pitching, in general. Every one of your pitchers is over a million, and you have six starters on the roster. You've got four starters that can start on three days rest, meaning they could be your entire rotation - now, I would toss Escobar, Bedard, and probably Jeff Weaver, and try to find a * left handed starter who is stronger against right handed batters.

In the 'pen, Frasor is going to get lit up. He's right handed, but he's weak against right handed hitters. I would go and see if a guy like Glendon Rusch is available. Lefty, 7R.

I don't know what the plan is with Ryan Freel, but he also looks like a waste of your money, at least to me. Were you planning on DHing him? Unlikely, with the other guys you've already got all over the place. With Freel, and the questionable coupling you've got over at first base, I think you should be able to snatch up a 1B who will be both healthy and productive for you - Richie Sexson? Johnson will put up some numbers when he's healthy, but he gets hurt too often. Mientkiewicz shouldn't be on a Fenway team, I don't think.

Molina is going to be horrible for you, offensively, and he'll get hurt a bunch, too - leaving Gerald Laird to do a bunch of your catching. Yikes. I would try to grab a guy like Mike Matheny or even Brian Schneider, and run with them. They fit your "good defense" plan.

I'll check back in tomorrow evening to see if you have any more questions, and to check on the progress of your team. I hope that my criticism is taken constructively, I'm only trying to help.

Disagree with JD abt Frasor, having a reverse RHP in that price range is a good move as long as you have enough regular RHP for HAL to match them up successfully. I would drop Escobar as suggested & get a LH RP in the pen, I found Grabow works great in a park like Fenway. Also, Boyer nice card but in Fenway you can downgrade to someone like Putz, a true RH specialist, since you already have Weathers & K-Rod as your main RPs vs RH. Also, Bedard decent card, but you could also downgrade to a cheaper LH SP if needed, you are not likely to get enough use from your 5th SP to justify the price.

Assuming Gomes is your DH, I would look to do 3 things on offense:

1) Drop Cruz for the best OBP in LF vs RHP you can find (preferably a LH or SW). You need a true leadoff guy & don't have one.

2) Agree that Molina not best catching option. I would go with a platoon like Doumit vs LH & D Miller vs RH or similar.

3) Put Freel as your platoon in LF & find a cheap 2B backup/platoon with Hudson. Hudson will be hurt some so it should be a decent backup, not a complete $.50 scrub.
