All,
I'm trying to get some "evidence" one way or the other on whether a 5 at 1B will kill you in a no DH league.
If you have teams currently going like this (and even if you are doubling up in a DH league w/ Hafner and Ortiz both on your team), I'm interested to see what you results have been.

No concrete evidence but I think anything can work and I'm sure it has. I am also assuming a bad error rating in my answer(Delgado, Ortiz, etc.) However, with a "5" rated first baseman, I think some planning would have to go into it regarding the rest of your team. Doing it on the fly would be much tougher to get the right team around him IMO. I also don't think having a JT Snow as the backup is a good move. He cost too much and negates the advantage you get for playing a bargain, as playing the "5" is a bargain because their cost is based almost solely on their offense. If you have too spend the extra $$$ to back him up, I don't like the move. I would only do it if I was totally desperate for some punch and could find no other way to get it.
96 wins huh? that would be okay w/ me

I only got 2 position players out of all of the 14 that I drafted. . . and now after all of the pickups, I have $4M left over. .. and now I'm thinking that the Gibbons/LeCroy platoon I have I should replace w/ Big Papi.
What do you guys think?
There are 75% righties in the league, and the lineup is:
C. Valentine
1B. Gibbons/LeCroy
2B. Kennedy
3B. Blalock/Encarnarcion
SS. Reyes
LF. Ramirez
CF. Kotsay
RF. Abreu
No DH, playing in PNC 1-16, 1-10, 1-10, 1-4

Ortiz would definitely be better.

Here's a team at PNC where I am using Hafner at 1B with Erstad as a back-up. 51-48 after 99 games in a -very- tough league.

I mentioned this in another string, but I have Giambi at 1B in US Cellular in a no-DH league. However, I have 1s at SS, CF, and 3B, and a 1/2 platoon at 2B. My corner outfielders are 2s. This more than negates the rare X-Card results for my 5 at 1B. I'm 65-55 at the moment...least runs allowed in the league and 2nd or 3rd in runs scored.

FWIW- I'd vote for Big Papi too but...
Gibbons, although he hits RH's slightly better than LH's, has some nice BPHR's vs. southpaws.
I'm playing him both ways right now and he doing fine. Good value guy IMHO. Decent D, lefty bat with power. Good for a HR park.
