Relief Usage Settings

Relief Usage Settings

Postby kimkrichbaum2 » Sat Aug 12, 2006 2:50 pm

I have never played around with the relief usage settings, always play on normal, and alter use through the Slow and Quick hooks on individual relievers. How does setting Relief Usage on Agressive or Conservative affect HAL's choices? What do you see as the advantages and disadvantages of the different settings? And how do they interface with the individual reliever and starter "Hook" settings?

thanks!

IMO They Don't Work

If you pitch in PETCO and spent money on mid- to expensive starters, you should consider "Conservative"

If you pitch in Coors and spent more money on relief pitchers, you would use either "Normal" or "Aggressive"

IMO, these settings don't work as advertise because when you use Conservative - HAL should ignore its tendency to relieve a pitcher if he reaches his POW (to some degree). However, TSN's settings make "Conservative" really "Normal" and "Normal" is "Aggressive" and so on (as compared to the CD game settings).

To be effective, you should manipulate the pitchers' individual settings "hook" settings and see how the Manager Strategy works as it should impact the pitching use in general.

Frankly, TSN's version of the pitching logic needs help but we'll see it sometime after ATG V is released. :x

Thanks for the comments, I'd still love some info on specifically how HAL's decisions are different with the different settings.

Kim, Here is the way I do it....I always leave bullpen usage at Normal....I use the slow-Quick hook option on player cards and never change it off of normal...I have found that if you use aggressive HAL will jerk your pitcher in a flash and not even give him a chance and setting it to conservative HAL will leave him in to get trashed....These are just my observations, and by my overall W/L pct. I could very possibly be wrong :D ...Alot of it also depends on how much money you have invested---If you have a ton of money invested in SP---let them pitch the most innings....If you have a great pen and cheap starters--put em'(SP) on quick hook and let the pen have it early...My advise to you if you have cheap starters and a great pen and you are quick hooking your SP's...max out in the number of relievers you can get because you'll need em' all....Hope that makes sense and helps. :D

Thanks Pelzer,
that helps a lot. if you set to Agressive, will HAL pull both your starters and relievers quickly, or just your starters?

Now that is a very good question...I have wondered that myself..I am not real sure if it applies only to yanking the starter or if it is aggresive for all pitchers...Any answers out there??

Last I heard, this is still up for debate. It's kinda' dumb that we don't know the answer to this one.

I have two things to add:

1. If you have cheapies in the pen (i.e. hard righties or lefties), they seem to get pummeled way too ofen without relief use being set to "AGGRESSIVE".

2. My trickery with a cheap pen is largely innefective in 2006 (2005 cards) for some unkown reason. I suspect Bernie did some tweaking. I will not play another season with these cards without at least one of - Helling, Heilman, etc...

Check out Helling in this league. Worth every penny and then some:

IIRC, when I moved the pen setting to "NORMAL" for ts team to try to get Helling a few more innings, I went on a losing spree due to weird bullpen decisions by Hal. This team has a so-so offense, and needs the tight games in rder to win.
