First no DH league

Postby Roscodog » Wed Sep 20, 2006 7:19 pm

I'm in my first no DH league, is there anything that is more/less important than a DH league. I've made sure I have a good PH on the bench but other than that I've built the team as I normally do. Any advice?

With no DH you have to maximze production at each position. It puts a premium on offensive players at positions where offense is lacking. You may also have to have a weaker defense than you are used to in a DH league. If you want J Wilson at SS, you can't really have another non-offensiove player, as he'll have to bat seventh vs batting eighth in a DH league. Also, many of the LH bashers that can't field are LH(Giambi, Ortiz, Delgado to name a few). It makes having a LH park a bigger advantage IMO, as some LH players you always see picked, won't be selected. A good pinch hitter can help, although I say that more from my ATG leagues than from regular non-DH leagues.

Remember that you might need three or four different pinch hitters in many games. I tend to have cheap bench players whose primary value is in their offense rather than defense. That doesn't mean they are big sluggers, but they are much better options than batting a pitcher. I rarely use a defensive replacement in a non-DH league, becauue I don't want to waste a bench spot on a guy who can't pinch hit. You can find four or five guys to fill the roles. Often they are one-sided.
