yeah, well I don't know if I'm gonna play online or not. I'd rather spend the cash to buy the board game when i can play as many times as I want instead of paying every time I want to make a new team online. I dont know, but me and 4 of my friends are drafting teams for the board game right now. So far, I got A-Rod, Vlad Guerrero, Roy Oswalt, Brad Lidge, Billy Wagner, Torii Hunter, Carl Crawford and Miguel Cabrera and I'm gonna try for either Johan Santana, Chris Carpenter or Todd Helton with my next 2 picks.

Get a little action going on your board games and bring your winnings here and give the online game a try. You'll love it. :)

4 friends just isn't the same as matching wits with the 100's that play here. The game itself might be better with the board game, but nothing beats the fun of building a team during the pre-season.

Why buy the board game when you can get the CD-ROM version and NetPlay against your friends -- old and new, including many from the TSN/SOM community? Draft to your heart's content and play as much as you want when you want against HAL, then in as many leagues as your desire and schedule can handle.

I love both the board game/CDROM game and the online version.
To get a complete feel for the game there is nothing like playing the board game with the cards and charts. It doesn't get any more real than that unless you are at the ball park.
The CD game is great particularly for ease of collecting stats and when you want to re-create seasons or play more teams than you have managers for. All the rules and charts of the board game are included in the CD computer game.
The online game is great for bringing those hundreds of players together and there is some real competition here that will helps teach how to get the best performance out of a lineup, how to choose players wisely, and lots of great ideas on maximizing the value of your ballpark. But it does have limitations that restrict the full play of the board/CD game. Not all the rules/options are implemented, the same basic lineups must be used for a three game series instead of each game, and replacements and injuries are subject to the vagaries of HAL, the computer manager.
I put it this way - head to head play with the board/CD game is most like being a manager on the field. Online strat is most like being a general manager, where you pick the players, make lineup and rotation decisions, and then let the teams play without atbat by atbat decision-making.
Hope that helps.

You left out the part where HAL is the son of the owner so you can't fire him and he's just a bit more demented than Billy Martin on crack.

the actual video game sounds like it might be pretty good, but i dont know. i'll probably stick with the board game for now so i can get the hang of it. one of my friends is in a league where they all get together and play the board game head to head. i like being able to rub it in my friend's faces :D

I recall the board game days well, when I played in a St. Louis league in the '70s. It was great getting together at someone's house for a day of Strat, beer and smackdown.
Nowadays, I live in a rural area where there aren't enough Strat players to form any kind of league. NetPlay is the next-best thing -- maybe even better, since it does the stats for you. Since one uses an IM during NetPlay -- either the one included in the CD-ROM version or better ones like YM and AIM, there's still interaction. Only it's with players all over the country -- and even world, if you have Munich Man (Germany) or BobM (Canada) in your league.
My suggestion: get the CD-ROM version with cards, have one of your friends copy the charts for you and buy some dice (including a 20-sided one for splits). That way, you can do either -- play F2F or NP.
