You should put a link to your team here. That way people can take a look at it before giving advice.
Maur is a great catcher, but could you spend the money elsewhere to bolster your staff.
Question is whether or not this is where the money is needed the most?

the way to post a link to your team is this:
go to the statistics page. Then click on your team. Your URL should now have a ?userid= with some numbers at the end. Post that link, so we can see your team, division, free agents and we can give you a better look.
Mauer is better, vs R, mccann vs L. normally you face much more RH pitching than L, but check your division (as those teams you play the most) and see which side you need to be better againsr.

Dont know about Mauer, yet but drop Prior...no need to go with him w/ the 4* guys you have. What's your lineup? is Lofton your DH? I have some/a lot of questions I guess...sorry

yes, you can drop Prior right now, and get down to the 24 player min. and get that extra money for waivers.
Then you have to think about where you want to spend that money. As this is your first team, first realize very rarely does someone win their first time out. The little things aren't hard to grasp, but really need to be played to undertand. Remember to reference http://forums-beta.sportingnews.com/viewtopic.php?t=9842 as it has a lot of answers already.
I'd say you need a better SS, 3B and CF, and decide wether to keep Lofton ot holiday as a DH. The only 3 range def I would play at SS is M Young. There are many decent SS left, Young, Rollins, Jeter, Arod. They'll go quick so grab one with your first waiver pick.
CF you have to higher priced option (A jones, Wells) who are really nly decent versus one side. Then you have some cheap guys who dont hit much, but play good Def in Reed johnson, Beltran or taverez.
3b, M Cabrera would be the best guy, and probably the only guy I would place #1 above a SS.
Your bullpen needs some work I think, and personally, I'd prefer Contreras or Buhlere over Smoltz.
It's actually not a bad start for a first team, and can definetly do well. Figure out what spot you need people to bat in your lineup and try to get guys to match. you have a leadoff or #2 guy in Abreu already. texeria in the middle, but build you lineup (read in the newbie advice therad posted above on what should go where) and see what spots need improvement.

i didn't check the money, but drop buck and pick up mauer...then platoon the catchers for L/R matchups...I always have bad luck with smoltz, and most people i see do too. I'd drop or trade him. i agree, drop prior and upgrade the offense or RP's.
