Award Voting Criteria

Award Voting Criteria

Postby PAULMINICUCCI » Sun Oct 22, 2006 11:32 am

I don't usually spend much time on the award voting but when you have a player enjoying an outstanding season you check it from time to time to see how they are doing.

I am in a league where the ERA is over 4.70 and good pitching is rare. I have Hallady pitching in PNC whose stats are below and Clemens (Petco), Santana and Capuano (PNC) who on on a first place team and pitch at Petco. Clemens team and my team have identical records in 2nd place. When I checked the Cy Young Award Clemens, Santana and Capuano are running 1st, 2nd, 3rd with Hallady a distant fourth.

Halladay, Roy
W L S BS IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA WHIP
11 2 0 0 152.1 111 30 27 17 132 11 1.60 0.84

Clemens

W L S BS IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA WHIP

16 4 0 0 194.1 138 54 51 51 176 17 2.36 0.97

Santana and Capuano

W L S BS IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA WHIP

13 8 0 0 192.1 135 54 51 49 190 20 2.39 0.96

12 2 0 0 156.2 129 64 60 53 106 22 3.45 1.16

Some other data inlcudes BA, Shutouts, K's/W and K's.

BA Shutouts, Complete Gs K's/W K's
Halladay . 202 2 8 7.76 132
Clemens .197 <2 <3 3.45 176
Santana .195 <2 6 3.68 197
Capuano .222 <2 <3 NA 106

Taken as a whole I would rank Clemens first but I think on the basis of stats Halladay should be 2nd. So I was wondering what do you think the criteria for Cy Young shgould be? Shouldn't WHIP and ERA be first? Shouldn't control and Shutouts count as well? Complete Games?

It seems like wins is the main criteria. It is rare to see a pitcher have numbers Hallady have. I have not had any pitcher go this deep into a season and have the WHIP and ERA he has. What do you guys think?

Obviously, many of the writers covering your league have their head up their ass.

The awards are always slanted towards the " star" player . In this instance though I think Clemens gets the nods because he has more starts . Halladay is a 5 day man while Raja is 4 game guy , thus more starts , more innings. just my .02

the awards always go to the expensive players very hard for cheaper players to get votes even if their seasons are far superior

with starters the * also get the nod for some reason strikeouts and ip matter as much or more than wins and era

the type of guys I use rarely get votes but I dont worry about it anymore too many other things annoy me about hal
