You raise an interesting issue.
From SOMO 2007 FAQ/Rules >> Choosing Your Players >> Draft Requirements >> "Some players are missing from the real-life team rosters. Where are they?"
[quote:d7171c3a30]Only players who received a Strat-O-Matic card in the 2006 card set are included in the draft. Generally, players with fewer than 50 AB or fewer than 25 IP are not included.
Additionally, certain players were removed from the game because their inclusion would have unrealistically skewed game results. These players are: [b:d7171c3a30]Cha Seung Baek, Jeff Baker, Brian Bannister, Fabio Castro, Brandon Harper, Jeff Karstens, Adam Lind, Mike Morse, Josh Rabe, Jeff Salazar, Chris Sampson, [/b:d7171c3a30]and [b:d7171c3a30]Reggie Willits[/b:d7171c3a30]. [/quote:d7171c3a30]
This policy is consistent with past seasons.
Their exclusion list is shorter than in most seasons, but it's not unrealistically short.
As for many of the examples you listed: Helms, Scott, Church, and Bard each
[list:d7171c3a30]a) had >220 PA (1/3 of a season) and appeared in an average of 94 games.
b) had cards where neither vs. RHP nor vs. LHP did they perform better than Pujols, Hafner nor the rest of the cream of the crop.[/list:u:d7171c3a30]
I think it's legit that SOM starts with an objective standard and uses its judgment to weed out the guys who had 70 PA during a 3-week call-up from Tidewater and went 3-for-5 with 2 BB vs. LHP with a HR, a Triple mixed in.
