ESCOBAR

ESCOBAR

Postby RiggoDrill » Mon Mar 12, 2007 6:33 pm

Is Alex Escober worth 4.31M? The hitting card is scary, but so is that [b:8db9b8af1c]injury roll [/b:8db9b8af1c]on a "7". I was going to use him on my first team, but wimped out and dropped him when Delmon Young appeared on the FA wire.

What does everyone else think? What kind of back up would you use if you had Escober in the lineup?

Not Erstad.

I'd back him up with Duffy.

I have Escobar in a team, I think the price is right on the money for that card/injury roll. I am taking a chance and backing him with Figgins/Ford. I used Sexson a lot in 05, I'm approaching Escobar is a similar fashion.

Is TUCKER worht over 2mil. Sure he has a great OBP but I wouldn't spend the money on him. Example Hocking last year card was alot cheaper.

Tucker looks like a more expensive Menechino circa 2001-2002.

taking away VORP and defense, and only looking at offense, Escobar has the 2nd best card in Shea/Kaufmann behind Pujols. He has a top 15 card in the Cell. All this for 4.31 mil, worth every penny.

Does anyone else feel like TSN was a lot more liberal with including extreme low-AB cards this year? Helms, Scott, Church, Loney, Theriot, and more...

Compare to them NOT giving Baerga a card in '04, yet he had more AB than some of those players and his card wouldn't have been as expensive as a lot of them.

I'm not really complaining, but it seems like there's been some sort of fundamental shift in thinking there...

You raise an interesting issue.

From SOMO 2007 FAQ/Rules >> Choosing Your Players >> Draft Requirements >> "Some players are missing from the real-life team rosters. Where are they?"

[quote:d7171c3a30]Only players who received a Strat-O-Matic card in the 2006 card set are included in the draft. Generally, players with fewer than 50 AB or fewer than 25 IP are not included.

Additionally, certain players were removed from the game because their inclusion would have unrealistically skewed game results. These players are: [b:d7171c3a30]Cha Seung Baek, Jeff Baker, Brian Bannister, Fabio Castro, Brandon Harper, Jeff Karstens, Adam Lind, Mike Morse, Josh Rabe, Jeff Salazar, Chris Sampson, [/b:d7171c3a30]and [b:d7171c3a30]Reggie Willits[/b:d7171c3a30]. [/quote:d7171c3a30]

This policy is consistent with past seasons.
Their exclusion list is shorter than in most seasons, but it's not unrealistically short.

As for many of the examples you listed: Helms, Scott, Church, and Bard each
[list:d7171c3a30]a) had >220 PA (1/3 of a season) and appeared in an average of 94 games.
b) had cards where neither vs. RHP nor vs. LHP did they perform better than Pujols, Hafner nor the rest of the cream of the crop.[/list:u:d7171c3a30]
I think it's legit that SOM starts with an objective standard and uses its judgment to weed out the guys who had 70 PA during a 3-week call-up from Tidewater and went 3-for-5 with 2 BB vs. LHP with a HR, a Triple mixed in.
