Nothing like Real Life

Nothing like Real Life

I'm a long-time Strat-o-board-enthusiasts, and this was my first season playing on-line. I was extremently disappointed in how my 1970's team performed. I'm used to variances between real life and strat-o-life, but literally every player on my team underperformed his real-life stats. Bill Madlock hits .275. George Foster hits .230. Hand Aaron hits .250. Vida Blue has a 4.61 ERA. Catfish Hunter a 3.40 ERA. Gaylord Perry a 3.78 ERA. Think about that. A team with Madlock, Foster, Aaron, Dale Murphy, Bill Buckner, Lance Parrish, Ralph Garr, Vida Blue, Catfish Hunter, Gaylord Perry, Dennis Eckersley finishes in last place, 15 games under .500. How? It's hard to sign up to play another season with these results. Have others experienced the same disappointment???

Of course these things happen. I have one ATG team struggling because my anchor bat, Mike Schmidt, is hitting [b:b3a8215077].177 with 9 RBIs in 113 ABs[/b:b3a8215077]. Another team won it's division because Ted Williams led the league hitting [b:b3a8215077].370[/b:b3a8215077]. I had a '70's team where Randy Jones was a flop and Sal Bando hit 39 homers and 119 RBIs.

Such is life with Strat-o-matic and especially with the Mystery Card games. No single season is long enough to overcome the laws of probability. Sometimes the roll of the computer dice fall your way, sometimes not. The odds say that Mike Schimdt will hit but luck may disagree. If everything were 100% predictable, where would be the fun? There is an element of luck and an element of skill to the game.

When I have a winning team it is because of my great skill. When I lose it is only because of my bad luck.

You also have to take into account your studly hitters going against the cream of the crop pitching as well. I don't think George Foster hit 50 HR's hitting against the likes of Nolan Ryan, Ron Guidry and Goose Gossage day in and day out either. Nor do I think Catfish Hunter had to pitch against a lineup where Jim Rice, George Brett, and Reggie Jackson were manning the 3, 4 and 5 holes. It's all relative.

You have to realize the 70's game is a mystery card game, so anything can really happen. If you said you had all the best years of those guys and got poor results I would be surprised, but to just say you got bad results means nothing. If you get a bad year in that game, you have to dump the bad & grab another ASAP. It takes a while to get used to, especially if your used to the consistent percentages in the other SOMO games and the board game. The quicker you identify a bad season and get rid of the guy, the better off you are. Sounds like you held on to everyone. I just lost 99 games with Rod Carew, Lou Brock, Bobby Bonds, Dale Murphy, Rusty Staub & JR Richard, and the hitters all had some of their best years and I'd like to think I somewhat know what I'm doing after 230 teams.

This team lost 116 games and it had Ted williams on the team and I had to drop him to see if I could find anyone who could pitch. SGT D

The ATG stories and bad roll explanations don't really apply here. Of course players can greatly underperform in a mystery card game, especially in the '70's where there is a wide disparity in selected years. You have to figure out what year you have. Good player does does not equal good results much more in the 70's game than in any other game, and it usually isn't the rolls.
