07 A different game?

Does anyone think there is something different in the way the game works in 07 as compared to 06? Do you think the game engine has been tweaked in any way? Or does the game play the same to you? Are the managers who have been playing .520 to .550 ball still doing that in 07?

Yes, I am winning at the same rate that I always do. I seem to get a little better each year. I do think things change at least a little from year to year. Some changes have to do with TSN also getting better and more experienced, while some things have to do with the player set(see 2007 ballparks). To me, every year there is a post from people that aren't doing as well as they used to, searching for a reason. See last years "is it all just luck post", etc. I'm sure a few will jump on this game engine post, agreeing wholeheartedly that some of their misfortunes are do to the game engine being tweaked. To me, when I look at the standings, the guys who were always real good will still be real good. Of course there will be some new faces in the crowd. If the game does change, these players seem more than capable of adapting to whatever is going on. I think it is your imagination regarding the game engine, but if it isn't, you need to identify what is going on and how you can use it to your advantage.

Just wondering. When people posted the "just luck" posts last year I pretty much wrote what you wrote here. I'm sure that you are right, especially the last sentence.

I don't like

how in the new game you can't see player's stats when putting together your lineups. I had to choose to use the old interface in order to see player's stats. Crap.

I believed then and still believe luck is a very integral part of the game. Trust me, I've seen a league play out 3 times over with completely different results every time. I also have a team right now, that is just cursed. I mean on track to lose over 100 games, and I actually thought it was one of my better put together teams. Webb is 2-9 with almost a 6 era, Carpenter is 4-8 with a 5.6 era. Sure I'm in Wrigley, but it shouldn't be that bad, especially on the same team with Hafner hitting .250 and German hitting .200 wither a .289 obp. Sometimes the luck just kills you!!!!

On the other hand, when you have Escobar missing only 3 games halfway through the season.... luck can be good too :P

That being said, my teams all started off horribly, was well under .500 for the first few weeks. Now back to about .540%, so yes skill plays a part, but luck still does as well (remember last season someone had Manny the entire year hand he bated like .190 or something )

Yeah that's what I had to do. Use the old interface. I would have liked to use the new one and still be able to see stats while making the lineup.

If you open up two Internet sessions and get your roster on one and your lineup settings on the other you can toggle back and forth to see your roster to help you decide your batting order.

Results have been the same for me as well. In in 05 set, I relied on one stud pitcher (normally RJ or Santana), about $28 to $30 total in pitching. After a disasterous first 06 team trying a similar strategy, I quickly found the 06 SP's overpriced and went with a $21 to $23 staff, opting for great hitters that play great defense to compensate somewhat for the mediocre pitching. This year, at least for my present teams, I've let the ballpark keep the horrendous numbers that spice the pitcher's cards in check, again opting for a somewhat cheap staff. I've also been lucky enough for the most part to have a great draft, get the base players I wanted, at the same time identifying the cheaper players others most often select that I've little interest in, tossing them at the back end of my draft card, and allowing me an extremely high waiver pick.

Adjust, readjust, anticipate, fine tune, tweak. Luck always play a part of course. But, as long as you continue to play chess while others are playing checkers, you'll be successful more often than not.

Of course luck is an integral part of the game, but in the long term, bad luck is just an excuse used for bad results.
