Mauer

Mauer

Postby Surfer Joe » Fri May 04, 2007 9:11 am

Is it too early and I need to be more patient or is Mauer not a good fit for Comerica? He's very expensive and so I want to be sure that I'm not wasting all that money when I could build up my bullpen.

12 games is to early to make that decision. Mauer will/should hit anywhere and the OB is great. Keep him.

I like your bullpen. I usually go with 6 though and would have added another cheapie.

Thanks for the help Stoney. I would have liked one more guy in the bullpen too but the rest of the cheapies were horrendous and I only have 300K left.

Would you put my bullpen to "avoid weak side"? I had been doing that but then I thought my guys might get in too many games from all the switching so I just took it off of that today and will see what happens.

With what you currently have I would set,

Nathan - set up & closer both ways, slow hook, not before 8th, avoid blowouts, closer normal.

Zumaya - slow hook, not before 6th, avoid blowouts

Looper/Beimel - quick hook, avoid weak side, max 1-2, not before 7th

Riske - mop up

Watch how things go for a week. Zumaya should get most of middle relief since you will be limiting Looper/Beimel and Hal should choose him.

Your 3 weaker guys will probably have too many innings where they are fatigued and may have bad #'s. That's why I like an extra R2 cheapie to pick up some slack so the specialists are in too much.

FWIW - this is just my opinion, I don't qualify as an expert (yet).

12 games IS too soon to blow out Mauer.

Look at Mauer after 96 games (half in SAFECO):

HINT to almost everyone who has Mauer:
a) There are darn few high OBP guys in SOMO 2007 with real speed.
b) Mauer has so many gb(A) on his card, I can't count that high (and I'm an accountant by trade).
c) He doesn't have so much power that you'll miss him in the heart of the order. THUS
Unless one of Mauer's teammates is named Ichiro, Furcal, Jeter or Abreu, stick Mauer in the leadoff slot and reduce his personal output of double plays by 15-20 over the course of the season.
