Talk about dumb.
Mike Gonzalez (L) is pitching in the 9th.
With 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, Abreu comes to bat. However, in HALs immortal wisdom, he pinch hits for Abreu with Lew Ford (a 0.5M player that is horrible).

Although Gonzalez is better versus lefties, the chances of Lew Ford getting On base or a hit, are still worse than Abreu.
Why does HAL continue to do that?
Ugh!

Here is one for you. Close game Hal decides to pinch run for Dave Ross- catcher- even though I do not have any pinch runner listed.
So now I have Ross out of the game BUT in the 9th Hal then inserts a new catcher and for whatever reason then puts a 3 in center and pulls Edmonds
So now on his own he pulls two of my best hitters and worsens the defense at catcher and center. ???

What pisses me off is the absolute absurdity of the move ... which is MATHEMATICALLY the [b:fe2c831875]WRONG[/b:fe2c831875] move to make.
Versus Mike Gonzalez (L) in Wrigley,
Abreu (L) has 29.6 / 216 chances for a clean hit (non-X)
Abreu (L) has 67.6 / 216 chances
Ford (R) has 23.5 /216 for a hit
Ford (R) has 47.5 / 216 chances to get On base
Which one would you bat versus a Gonzalez????????? It is clear that Abreu should be!!!!
If HAL is making its decision purely on lefty and righty match-up ... then HAL just plain sucks and is a cheap, worthless, game engine. :x :x :x
Why wasn't Don't PH vs Lefties checked?

If you don't want anyone to pinch hit for Abreu vs LH you should check don't pinch hit for! That is one setting that always works.

Yeah, ... I know that option. However, there are times when there actually ARE people on the bench that can be better than Abreu.
In this instance, it was not the right move!!!
That's the point.

I know it sounds naive but I accept Hal for what it is and don't get worked up about whatever "stupid" moves it makes. If you want "totally realistic" play, you need to play heads up. I did that online for a year and it was great but it takes a lot of time. At least all the decisions were mine, stupid or smart. That's why I only play three or four HAL teams a season. Takes two teams to figure out which players are consistent and then you let it go. Have fun. :D

If HAL is a programmed AI,it has to be programmed to make our lives miserable. This is a way of keeping even the best players interested. You may be able to beat me(insert name of top 10 player here...let's say Cummings2),but you will never beat HAL!

Yet another example of Hal's complete and total ineptitude. Top of the 6th inning, Pedro gives up 3 straight hits. Ok, so he's tired. Next 5 hitters are, in order, Lowell (R), Martin (R), Hudson (S), Francouer (R) and Alex Gonzalez (R).
So who does Hal bring in? Naturally, my 6L lefty specialist, Brian Shouse (who I set to "avoid RH batters")!! I've got Foulke, Capps, Jenks, Cordero and even lefty Trevor Miller that I would've preferred to put in the game at that point. ANYONE but Shouse. So what happens? Shouse enters and ends up letting 3 of the 5 batters reach and gives up the go ahead and eventual winning run.
What's the point of the individual settings if Hal just keeps ignoring them?

How much have those other options that you mentioned pitched recently? Don't forget HAL is very sensitive to fatigue issues and what he thinks is the "big picture"...
I agree, any starting player you don't want to be PH for, simply check "don't pinch hit" on both sides- HAL is very good about that.
As much as possible, try not to make issues for HAL, because, he is dumb.
